I don't know much about old mausers, so hopefully you guys can help. I recently bought a mauser k98, but it looks different from any normal one. It doesn't have a cleaning rod, nor the hole for the cleaning rod. There is no piece of steel tube underneath the front of the barrel either. There is also no dismounting disc, or a hole where it should have been. It looks more compact that any normal k98 because the fore stock cap is closer to the metal circle piece holding the top piece of wood. There are some markings on it. It has a eagle with the swastika, and the letters byf 45 (I'm guessing 45 is the year 1945). It also says mod 98 for the model.

are there finger groves on the sides ahead of the action? is there a small hole drilled in the bottom side of the butt plate?

Sounds like the OP may have a bubba'd K98-whether Ivan bubba'd it or someone sportered it is another question.

The byf code on the receiver means that receiver was made by Mauser Oberndorf, and the 45 is (as he guessed) the year of manufacture.

This COULD be a very late war rifle, maybe a VK1? (or similar).

No take down disc, and no bayo lug is a kreigsmodell. Totally textbook for a byf45, which will also say mod.98 on the top.

Post pics.

Yes, pictures would be great.
A lot of Mauser guys are VERY interested in late war production K98's.
There is something about the crude metal and roughly machined wood that is appealing.
Some of the late war stocks look like they were gnawed out by a beaver.
