hi guys!
Sad to say one of guys we hunt with has passed away, great guy, he was the "joker" of the gang...
long story short, i inherited his guns,
1. win 94, 30-30
2. win 1893, 12g
3. win .22 pump
now this is the one i need help with, its a Mauser m98, i not sure of the caliber, there's a bunch of numbers on it but no caliber. The only thing going for me is that he had a few 8mm shells in a bag.

Can someone please tell what to look for to determine the caliber, otherwise I will have to bring it to the gunsmith.

Phil

Not so difficult.

Remove the bolt, and clean the bore and chamber.

Keep the bolt out, then drop the 8mm Mauser (8X57) round you have into the chamber. Does it drop in easily with just the rim and extractor groove proud of the chamber? If yes, remove it and then go to the muzzle end. If the muzzle is in good shape, insert the round bullet first into the muzzle and rotate lightly so as to cause a light scratch to form (this will not ruin the bullet). Measure the diameter at the scratch and let us know.
