I picked up a 98 mauser at the Salmon Arm Gun Show this weekend. It's in VG condition with a pristine bore and matching serial numbers. Standard length action and walnut stock with late model metal.
The rifle is abviously a scrubbed clean rework. Looks to have started life as a Czech 98 variant. That's all OK, the problem in identity comes from the later markings.
The serial numbers on the left of the receiver ring are slightly tilted.
Every other part bears at least and sometimes more of the last two digits of the serial number-not unusual.
The left side of the receiver and the bbl, where they mate, have a circle with a "T" inside stamped on them.
The top of the receiver is stamped "tgf" "1950"
The trigger gaurd is stamped sheet metal, but isn't the socalled "winter trigger gaurd" style. Just a slightly larger than normal style.
The floorplate has a raised flat spring just ahead of the trigger gaurd, that when depressed, causes the floorplate to fall out.
That it's obviously a postwar make up isn't an issue, I'm really wondering by whom and who for.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. bearhunter
