While looking for a new mauser, I began to wonder "which mauser variant is the best quality?" Now, I don't want to ask which is overall best, since that is the most subjective question. Instead, from what you have been able to experience or compare against, which variants, models, or production years have the best quality fit, finish, build, and accuracy? Brazilian 1908? Persian? Argentine? Let's hear some ideas, and be sure to provide some reasoning!

Happy shooting!

Hahaha! I enjoyed reading that thread! I have a Yugoslavian m24/47 that shoots very well, I am quite fond of it. They are a great rifles with lots of history and have not become ridiculous in price yet. Assuming you have 8mm Mauser at your disposal.

Swedish Mausers are up there.

Argentinian Model 1909 for it’s unique sporter style floor plate latch, unique bayonet, and unique caliber. It’s... “unique”

Of all the ones I own and have owned some of the Brazil M1908 are the nicest.
I suspect Brazil actually shipped some dark red tropical hardwood to DWM in Germany to make those.

They are also in 7mm Mauser and shoot well.

My second choice would actually be a FN made-for-Israel 1951 in 7.61NATO. That thing looks like new, probably kind of is because by the time the IDF got them they were well on the way converting to full auto weapons and it was probably never used. Mine looks like it anyways.

Second one seem harder to find.
M1908s are around but nice and clean ones tend to go for more money these days.

This is what you want. Only the finest for the discriminating Mauser purest and RC Snob! LOL

Here's my WW2 Canadian Vet bring back Deutsche Reichsbahn Mauser that was found in a building while on patrol in Germany,

1941 Portuguese contract K98K should be right up there for best materials, best finishing. A lot depends on the parameters that you set for "best".

Some of the early 20th Century Mauser models show beautiful workmanship, but close examination of some examples shows bolt setback in the locking lugs.

It’s easier to point out the worst Mausers.

As for the most valuable I would say it would be original WWII sniper models. The least being the Z41 and the most being the LSR receivers.

For shooting and general over-all quality, I recently picked up a Colombian FN-made Mauser (1950) that I'm loving. It's chambered in 30-06 and is incredibly accurate - one of the best Mausers I've ever had.

It's hard to argue with Swedish Mausers for accuracy, Yugo Mausers for quality/affordability and German Mausers for cool/historical factors.

I also love my Columbian 30-06 too . I think I've got most of the contract mausers and they are all comparable. May depend more on the individual gun.

I have a yugo mauser: Best milsurp for value right now in my opinion.
Also have an old parker hale 308 on a military m98 action. Shoots sub moa. These great rifles for the price they go for.

Those two fill the milsurp and sporter spots for mausers.
I would love to have a german mauser for the history, but the all matching ones go for a little too much for me, and the RC go for twice what i think they are worth.

Seriously though. $700 for a thrown together parts gun? You could get both of the mausers i mentioned above for that price. And they would match.

Yes, but they aren't a K98 and for some people that is the whole point.

I couldn't agree with you more! No collection is complete without the zf41 K98. Now, do you pronounce that Zee or Zed? Zee 28 or Zed 28? LoL
I prefer Zee as Zed sounds too Lieberal!

Here are two of mine, An ar42 and ar43 Zf-41 K98's.

Code on receiver - 'ar' = Mauser Borsigwalde, 42=1942; 43=1943

The the ammo be rare, my Mauser 71/84 Spandau is a hoot to shoot.
Then you look at your bank account, and although it was fun you cry just a little bit.
