I just bought a 8mm Mauser 1903 Portuguese Verguiro Mannlicher and wanted to buy a K98. I don't know enough about these guns. Looking for advice I guess. Not willing to pay big dollars for one but want a good one. Don't need numbers matching. Beside the ones that say K98, are there other guns that are basically the same thing. Better bang for the buck than the K98? I bought reloading stuff for 8mm so I thought I'd get the K98 as well. Thanks.

Many of the Turkish Mausers can be tuned to turn out really decent accuracy. Most of them were built in Germany on the same tooling as used for the German Mausers. Point to watch: the 1903 and its conversion (1903/35 but not marked as such) are a MEDIUM-length action, although still a large-ring 98 action: bolts do not interchange.

Your Portuguese 1903 is generally called a Mauser-Vergueiro and originally was a 6.5x58. The conversion to 7.92x57 was done in Germany in the 1930s. They are one of the SMOOTHEST actions ever devised. Read up on it carefully before attempting to strip the bolt; it is impossible to reassemble UNLESS you know the trick (which is not difficult, just strange). Vergueiro was the designer of the action; the rest of the rifle is pure German and highest-quality workmanship and materials. Enjoy!

Vergueiros are not 1903s they are 1904s originally in 6.5 x58mm or Mauser-Vergueiro m/1904/39 rifle in 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) and yes the smoothest military action i ever seen, i have 4 of them 2 originals in 6.5 x58mm and 2 converted to 7.92x57mm.

German mismatch or restored sporter, Russian capture, Yugo or Czech refurb. The Israeli rifles are nice too but most were rebarreled for 7.62 NATO.

Lots of options and they come up fairly often on the EE. $550 for a beat up shooter, $1000ish for a nice RC.

What does the terminology "electro-penciled to match regular Russian refurb k98s"?
Since when did the russians electro pencil anything? Should one stay away from a rifle with that claim in it`s advertisement?

This I can vouch for. Seller was fiddling with the bolt when I bought the gun. It ended up in 4 pieces. Basically impossible to reassemble without the trick. Need to hold both ends, turn both ends hold the bolt lever against something like a bench. There are YouTube videos on the procedure.

The Russians electro penciled parts when they refurbished the guns at the arsenal. That's why svt 40 and RC- k98 Mauser are forced matched
The yugo m48 would be the cheapest option and corwin arms may still have some for sale. Also lever has rc k98 mausers for sale if you want an actual k 98

You talking about leverarmsdot.com? None are listed on the web site.

I have seen parts for the k98 but no parts for other models. Is this an issue? I wanted a scope but the stripper clip wouldn't work than and most don't have scopes. Don't think these guns and scopes are the thing!

There is an entire gaggle of parts available for the Yugo M48 series Mauser actions, including Yugo military IR scopes and mounts which are great! There is a thread on Yugo Mausers in this forum. Check it out for some inspiration!

Maybe lever arms is sold out of them now
They had them listed last week when I looked

Just looked on their site and they are still listed for $625

I bought this gun: (spaces added after http)
https ://doctordeals.ca/product/mauser-ceskoslovenska-zbrojovka-a-s-brno-military-bolt-action-rifle-model-vz-24-8mm/ The link will die at some point. The gun looks like new basically. It was part of an inventory buy like 150 guns from a different gun store. I paid $550 + tax. I thought buying a russian capture sight unseen would be a risk when this gun is what it is. Not a M98 but good enough, the paper target won't know the difference! I chambered four 8 mm rounds in the gun so it must be 8mm. Bolt doesn't work that well.

Thanks everyone. I will have to get out to the range with the two new to me 8mm EH!

Concur with above.

Just picked up an M48A from Corwin-Arms for a sweet price and caked in cosmoline. I have an RC, and a Yugo K98 and love them. However, taking them M48s for a spin feels like I’m getting my ratty jeans on and taking a old pickup truck for a back road run for some beers. I have found the M48s do quite well with the right reload. Same for the K98 I’m sure.
