I bought a 9.3x62 A.G. Mella-Zehlis (Anschutz pre-WWII) and it's a great rifle. I love everything about the rifle action, how it handles except the safety.

Having grown up on simpler M700 type safetys, I'm not all that comfortable with the action of this Mauser style safety. I find myself having to double-check the correct way to set it, which is troubling to me.

I'm sure, given time, I will get used to it.

Anybody else?

I have changed safeties on a couple of my Mausers. It is easy to do.
You can swap the trigger for a Timney or similar that is equipped with side safety like the Remington. It will require you to relieve the wood a bit to fit. a Dremel tool will suffice to do the job.
Or just change the bolt shroud to a model 70 style safety. that fitting requires a gunsmith or advanced tinkering skills.
The side benefit of a more familiar "feel" is that you can now mount a scope lower without interference from the safety.

^ Wait a sec! I may not be familiar with the Mauser safety, but I would NEVER alter it! It's just a matter of getting used to it; like the back-asswards ZKK-602, which operates in the opposite direction to any 'conventional' safety.

And I would NEVER drill and tap my A.G. Mella-Zehlis to put a scope on it!

HERESY!!

Good for you.
The original 3 position Mauser safety is, in my mind, the best safety ever put on a bolt action rifle. It is certainly the safest safety. It takes the pressure off the sear and completely prevents the hammer from falling. When it is in full safe it could fall down a mountain and not discharge.
Pushed into the straight up, 2 position the bolt works to unload the magazine, in complete safety of not firing. if you are very close to shooting, but still want it safe, push it up into that position.

You could swap it out with a Beuhler or one of the clones... no alteration of the rifle required and you can return it to original condition if you want. I actually prefer the original safety. The only issue with it is scope mounting.

With the original safety, if I'm expecting a shot I keep it in the middle position and push it over with my thumb as my hand takes a firing grip... very fast.

If you have no plans to mount a scope, I would just practice with the original until it becomes second nature.
