I posted this in the Sporting Arms Forum, but figured this might be a better place.

I will be looking at a Mauser sporter in .243 Win. in the next few days. I know squat about the K98 actions and I would like to know how to tell if it is a 98 or other Mauser. Are there a lot of Mauser action choices or not? Anything to watch out for with this action?

Thanks,
Mark

You can probably get away with getting a Russian Captured K98 and re-barreling it to 243Win. Considering the 243win is the same case as the 308Win that they did post war conversions on. If you want a German made K98 action as a base. :)

A picture of the top of the action (what your likely to see):

It should have a marking somewhere on the reciever to the effect of K98, or something similar. I'm not hugely into mausers so I couldn't say for sure... I just seem to remember one of mine had it.. I think...

If it's already chambered in 243 then that's your best bet, as you're already going to pay a bunch for a rifle that's going to have to be bubba'd in this case.

Thanks, guys. Yes, the gun is chambered in .243 Win already. Synthetic stock, drilled and tapped with rings and a scope installed. The seller seemed quite unknowledgable about the rifle, the barrel and who/when the re-barrelling took place. So I want to be a bit better informed as to what I am looking at before I fall for a line of BS on it.
