Hi CGN,
I just acquired a 1903/30 Turkish Mauser from tradex and noticed a crack in the stock. After the initial feeling of frustration I took it apart to see how bad the crack it. It appears to just be on the surface and I can’t get it to open up not matter how I flex it. My question is, is there an easy way to repair this because glue really won’t be an option if I can’t get the crack to open up or should I just contact tradex and ask for a refund?

I will try again and see if I can get any flex out of it. It doesn’t look like any repair work has been done to it but I will get a light under the crack to get a good look.

not sure how Tradex works on returns, however their is several ways to find out if the crack goes deeper , but the best thing to do would be to talk to tradex before you go any further so as not to cause any further damage to void the return.

If the crack can be opened up, using glue might be an option. You could also look at adding brass screws, similar to what the fellow did on The Box O'Truth... Once on the website, check the post titled "Educational Zone #57 – Repairing a Split Stock" for some tips...

I am going to keep it and fix the stock. I like the rifle and it has a good bore on it. I did a M95 once with epoxy and brass threaded rod. Was really happy with the way it turned out. This one I am tempted to use Acraglass gel and brass rod again.

Good luck with your project! I have been looking for a Turkish Mauser for a while too, but not looking that all that hard really... Most seem to be mismatched unfortunately and I would like a matching one. Maybe it is time for me to ask for EE access... I hope that things turn out good for you.

Threaded rod and Acraglass would be an excellent way to do it. It doesn't really need to be brass - especially if it doesn't show. It looks as though you should be able to come up through the inlet for the trigger guard. If you can do that without breaking through the surface, the repair will be invisible.

The advantage of the cyanacrylate is that you don’t have to spread the crack and will be almost invisible. I have used it to glue a mosin for end together that had split in two length wise.

X2

That 10 second Gorilla Glue Crazy Glue (either Gel or Regular) is amazing what it will bond and fix.
