Mausers in 308 win? Dont they mean spitzer?

I had been interested in the mausers that have been chambered in 308 win, and when I went to my local gunsmith / shop I was told that a lot of these rifles are actually designed for 308 spitzer not winchester and that firing 308 win/nato could be dangerous and that it was not recommended. Anyone know anything about this??
 
your gun plumber ? is referring to Spanish rifles that were rebarreled for the CETME cartridge that was standard in Spain until the 1980’s . this cartridge is a less power full .308 or 7.62 Nato. Mauser Mod 95s
Guess the Spanish can’t handle the recoil . Is your rifle a mod95 or mod 98 ???
 
When the first converted M95s were imported into the US, the importer had a number of them tested to destruction by HP White Labs, prior to releasing them for sale. No problems.
 
Mines chambered in 7.62 Nato not 308 win. Only ones ive seen chambered in 308 win were commercial target models, that someone re barreled.

Also there is no 308 spitzer caliber (spitzer is a type of bullet )

This. Came up on another forum just a week or so ago. The FR7's are potentially dangerous with regular 7.62 NATO ammo. I say potentially because some have used it and still have all their fingers, but it is right on the cusp of the pressure the firearm can handle and there were supposedly incidents.... Anyway, Spain took some of the powder out of the NATO round, and called it the CETME. Kind of ruins the ammo sharing potential the conversion was supposed to give in the first place.... I believe the FR8 is a stronger action, but don't quote me. Any of the common Model 98 conversions are plenty strong to handle 308 Win.
 
I would not go back to that gunsmith after hearing this.

I too have wanted to pick one of the 1916 short rifles in 7.62 cetme but I have not gotten around to it yet, I am sure reloading 308 Winchester brass and sourcing bullets would be one of my more easier calibres to load for.

FR8 is a stronger action. And your local gunsmith is an over qualified village idiot. 308 spitzer, i blew tea out my nose!
 
The .308 Spitzer was developed by Hans Pferdekacke for the FJ's in 1942. After the war the Americans stole the design and re-designated it the 7.62X51mm.
 
The Spanish Mausers in .308/7.62x51mm NATO should all be safe to shoot with standard .308 or 7.62 Ball.

The 7.62 CETME was only an experimental round that was developed for the Automatic CETME battle rifle, which was later dropped for the 7.62 NATO. I think it's mostly "lost in translation" where the error of thinking Spanish steel is soft/weak and that all Spanish Mausers besides ones based off of M98 actions were made for the CETME round and can't handle 7.62 NATO....?
