I have this "old" Maverick that i bought new for ~$100, from Canadian Tire, when the new laws were coming in around 1997-98 that i havent really shot, as its a full choke system.

I verified that nothing can be screwed in or out of the barrel. i really never shot it, maybe 1 box through it, but have always been concerned that i cant shoot steel in it. any ideas on the cost of a new vented barrel and where to get one? i would be shooting skeet, partridges, pheasant, chickens, ducks, geese etc.

if i recall modified choke was more the upland bird choice, what about the waterfowl.

or better yet what are your suggestions and where can a new barrel be picked up?

The Maverick 88 is a lower end Mossberg M500. Any shop can order you a barrel. Suggest you buy a changeable choke barrel. Frontier Firearms is listing one at $109.95. Don't know what choke tubes are worth. Remchoke tubes run around $10 each though. No W's.

If you're not in a hurry, keep your eye on the EE.
I found an Accu-Choke (changeable chokes) barrel for Mossberg 500 for about 100 bucks awhile back.
I think it's been said, Mossberg 500 parts all work on the Maverick.

Good luck.

An alternative is to open that fixed choke to Imp Cyl. It'll be perfect for grouse (lead shot) and for waterfowl (steel) within 30+ yards. Honestly, when hunting ducks and geese with my 12s, I almost always use the Imp Cyl choke. On rare occassions I'll put in the Mod choke if the birds are hanging out there. But 90% of all my hunting is with Imp Cyl or less.
