I have a new Maverick 88 that has less than 100 rounds through it. Ever since new it has occasionally misfired. No mark on the primer, nothing. After two or three misfires in a row, using new or different shells, it will start to operate properly again. It always fires the shells that did not work. When it does fire, the primer mark is quite deep. I stripped the gun right down as someone indicated that it may have been manufacturing debris in the firing pin area. This seemed to work for quite a while and I thought the problem was fixed. It has started again. Another person suggested that perhaps I was not getting the slide all of the way forward and the therefore the breach was not closing completely. Is this possible, because the firing pin still sounds like it is activating (loud click))?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Something else you might want to look at is removing the trigger group and cleaning it really well. I dont mean to take it all apart, just out of the reciever and make sure that nothing is getting in the way of the hammer when it rises. Do you know what I mean? I think there might be something preventing the hammer from striking the firing pin hard enough. And you have checked the bolt and the spring and there is nothing in there?
and last but not least, you are "racking the gun" and not massaging it right?... you are putting effort into the forward and back motion, not trying to be "too gentle"?
work it like a tool. Sometimes there can be problems when people are being to "gentle" with pumps. I've seen it with the 500, 590 and the 88's.
But mossberg is the only shotgun I will own. Love um.

If the pump(slide) is not forward and locked, you can still hear a click, but the firing pin will not strike the primer. As stated above try cleaning the entire trigger group without disassembling it.

I have tried different shells, it doesn't seem to be isolated to one brand. Plus, like I said, there doesn't seem to be contact with the primer. I have taken it apart and cleaned everything I could. It may just be a problem with me massaging it like hoochie indicated. I will focus on that for the time being.

Thanks
