Does anyone know where I can find a Maverick dealer in (Southern) Ontario? My PAL was just approved and will be looking to get my first shotgun. I've read nothing but good things about the newer maverick 88's and for the price of a decent 870 I could get 2 (28" and 20") mavericks. The only shotgun I've had any experience with was a Benelli Nova, so I'd like to handle a Maverick/870/500 before making any decisions. I plan on using it to get into skeet shooting, maybe turkey hunting and as a general bush gun (hence the want for a shorter and longer barrel)

After doing a quick search I could only find a thread from 2009, so I was wondering if there was any recent advice:

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up guys, I appreciate the input! I'll shoot Scott a PM.

I know I might be opening up a can of worms, but do you guys have any opinion on the maverick vs 500 vs 870 debate? Preferably first hand. I've read a few reviews but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra money for the 500 or the 870....

Thanks again

No, I have owned them all and the Maverick 88 is every bit as good as an 870 Express model or the Mossberg 500. Most places have the Maverick 88 for 199 new. How can you beat that for a new shotgun with chokes and a vent rib? You can take this out of the box and load it up with your favourite 3 inch steel shot and have at some waterfowl.

Thanks again for the input, this may be a noob question but is it okay to work the action of different shotguns in stores? I imagine dry-firing the gun is a no-go, but am I okay to rack it a few times to see which action I prefer?

i am in the same boat and so far reading all the threads and reviews i could i will still go for the 870 EXPRESS with wood stock :D
good luck on your research

The action may be a bit stiff or sticky on a brand new gun, they will all break in to a smooth action with time. The Maverick 88 I used to own had a very nice light, crisp trigger with very little creep. Not bad for a plastic trigger group. Most gun stores sell them as theyre good cheap pump guns so theyre usually pretty easy to find.

Just a quick update, Just picked one up from Scot as recommended in this thread. Great guy to deal with and very pleased with the quality for a $200 dollar gun. Only complaints are that the safety is a little stiff (others share this complaint) and that there is a bit of "wiggle" in the pump, but I think all Mossberg 500's have that.

Thanks again guys :)
