Maverick Model 88 Security Stock Question

Hello All,

I am looking at getting a Maverick Model 88 Security with the 18.5 inch barrel and synthetic stock. It says parts are interchangable with Mossberg 500's. Question then is, can I put wood furniture on this gun to replace it's synthetic stock and foregrip? Now, legally, if I wanted to put a 14" or shorter barrel on it (son't think I would), could I legally swap out the barrels so long as it remained over 26 inch length?

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to swap furniture, and legally, you'd be able to change barrels, but I'm not sure how short you can go with the Maverick design.
 
The parts are interchangeable with 500's, yes.

The barrel part will be a tough one, as you will need a "factory" shorter barrel.
You cant just cut one down to desired length. Finding a factory short barrel for a 500 will be tough, and id say impossible as they prob dont make them.
 
i measured mine, 15.5" is about as short as you can go with the 6 rd. mag. Though dlask quoted me at about $600 for a custom barrel for my benelli, probably the same for the maverick. I'm at 27.5" OAL with an 18.5" barrel and pistol grip so a full stock with a short barrel would keep you legal.
 
the forend on the Maverick is NOT interchangeable, unless you buy an entire Mossberg 500 forend tube assembly to go with it. and if youre going to do that, you would have been better off buying a Mossberg in the first place.
(unless theyve gone and upgraded the Maverick line again, they keep changing it.)

btw: you are all over the place with these threads. yesterday you were asking for a $200 18.5" pump/double.
decide if you want an 18.5, or a 14" barrel. a cheap gun or an expensive one. getting a 14" barrel on a Mossberg would be prohibitively expensive if not impossible.
if you want an inexpensive sub-18.5" gun, then buy a Grizzly or Norinco 870 clone.

youre also not going to get a Mossberg/Maverick with the mag tub flush with the barrel unless you buy it that way to begin with: they cant take mag extensions.
you can change mag tube lengths (mag tubes unscrew), but while the standard length mag tubes and barrels are easy to find and inexpensive, the extended mag tubes and 'persuader' style barrels (that fit on the long mag tube) generally cost more, in which case again its not worth it to buy them separately - just buy another Mossberg in that config.
 
Thanks Manbearpig. Basically, I am just trying to decide what I am finally interested in, and simply put, I am looking to get a normal buttstock, normal fore-grip with a shorter (18.5" is just FINE) barrel and the mag tube flush with the barrel or close to that. The Maverick 88 Security in 18.5 in barrel seems like a good option.
 
An edit here, I've decided to aim for the Model 88 Security with the 8 round mag tube, as it is flush with the 20" barrel. Another 1.5 inches is not going to change much in my opinion or use of the gun.

just got one on Friday, fun gun to shoot :D slugs only at my range though so my shoulder is still a bit sore haha

btw its not an 8 round tube its 7+1

also look at the Mossberg Persuader models.
they also come with the extended mag tube. i sold mine with the full stock and a pistol grip for $200 in the EE. aside from a lot of bluing wear from being carried in the bush, it was in mint shape.

if you think you might ever want to change forends on your gun, spend a bit more for the Mossberg. the cost to upgrade your Maverick forend to a Mossberg forend assembly down the road will cost more than the price difference between the two guns.

keep in mind that the 20" Mossberg/Maverick with the extended mag tube loaded is a large, heavy gun (despite the fact that Mossbergs are lighter than 870s). there is a huge difference between how it handles, and how an 18" Wingmaster, or a 12.5" 870 Clone handles. personally i still think you would be better off buying a 2 3/4" Wingmaster w/fixed choke ~30" barrel (they can be found cheap) and cutting the barrel down. youll be able to add/remove extensions, swap stocks/forends/etc and the finish and quality will be higher.
 
Hmmm. Allright... it's certainly an option, I just hope the magazine on those Wingmasters extends out to about 18 inches or so. If not, mag tube additions are a possibility.
 
wingmasters have the standard 5 rd. mag tube, and will need a 2 rd. extension that would fall just short of 18.5". most seem to run $200+ in the EE and go up from there. I payed $230 for my maverick 88 cruiser new, and the 18.5" security goes for $230-$300 depending where you buy. The maverick would be your least expensive option, rem/norc 870 would be a nicer, but more expensive option. take your pick

cut it down to 18.5", certainly not 14". everyone here should know this by now: since half the forum is cut down projects, and the other half is threads asking about what length they can cut it down to :D

youll need a +2 extension - but theyre not all made equal.
there are certain +2s that are flush with 18" barrels (choate, scattergun tech/wilson combat), and some that are flush with 18.5"(S&J, remington). also some are very crap quality (choate), while others are very well made (ST).

the Scattergun Tech/Wilson Combat extensions sell at Brownells for ~$50, and are one of the better quality extensions IMO. it comes with an integrated slingplate. they are flush with 18" barrels, however - so itll be a bit shorter on an 18.5.
