Hi,

Can you guys tell me the maximum distance that #8 shot will travel... assuming the wind is at my back and I point the gun up at 45 degrees to get the absolute maximum range...

I want to know how far I need to be safe if I'm going to be throwing clays up in the air!

It used to be known that you must allow 300yds. for shot fall when building a Trap range, that would be to accommodate #7 1/2 shot(largest allowed). This may not jive with todays' experts from the Gubment, who just want to make things as tough as possible for gun owners.

This is very interesting info...

There's a range I have shot on that has their trap and skeet fields pointing directly at their rifle range bench... ie when you're shooting rifle, if you look you can see these guys pointing their shotguns in your direction and firing...

Now, I've never paced out the distance... but I'm fairly certain it's less than 200m!!!

I think I might have a friend of mine measure...

I recall some research work Tom Roster did in Colorado, actually measuring shot fall distance for an industry segment, physically looking for shot that had fallen ( on staked-out white sheets) from shooting with the muzzle of various shotguns elevated at varying levels. The most he could find any load of 7-1/2's travelling was 229 yards.

Yep Yep!

That works for all us normal folks ... but if the CFO comes to approve your gun club range, there's a whole 'nuther chart they use !!!

Our cfo outlawed .22 rimfire at the 100 200 yd range because of a bunkered steel gong at 200 yds. - Seems the ricochets from .22 rds would endanger shooters 200 yds away from the gong , AFTER TRAVELLING 400 YDS ? - HA HA !
