Maximum range with IC barrel?

I've come to a conclusion that Prairie Storm in #6 do have some limitations on upland game. Seems that 26 meters or so, for my M37 in 20 gauge with the IC barrel, is just about max'ed out for a reliable killing pattern, at this distance. I have in the past, used a modified choke barrel from an O/U with this same load to knock sharptails out of flight. I wish I'd paid attention and paced off the distance. But it certainly was more than 26 meters.

The thing to consider here is not every gun and choke will pattern the same . I would think the mod would get you 30 plus meters though.

30 yds with and IC is not far off, I had a 20 gauge sxs that threw killing patterns with 71/2 shot to about 40 yds with the Mod barrel and about 35 with the IC barrel but patterns were very ragged with almost any #6 shot loads I tried, so its effective range was less with bigger shot.

There are so many variables including charge weight, shot size, hardness and velocity that the only way to establish a maximum distance is to pattern your gun with the load you've chosen.

You can tighten up patterns with the shotshell load alone. Buffering, extra hard shot, plated shot, lower weight, lower velocity can all help create denser patterns.
