In Alberta (while hunting) it's 2 in the mag and one in the chamber - a total of three shots allowed. I don't know if this applies to all provinces and territories.
I know it's the same for Ontario, 2 in the mag and 1 in the chamber. Mag plug is need as well. If your gun can hold more it needs to be mechanically plugged for only 3 shells max.
To be honest, I've never really understood why 3 shots is the limit. I've had a couple of situations where the lack of another followup shot caused me to lose a bird.
Is this a historical law, or in response to abuse in the past? Any Fish and Wildlife guys on here know?
From what I've read it's a law past when game harvesting was done without limits. Guns had no plugs and you could shoot as much as you liked all day, all season. Once they put in the the migratory game bird act limits were set and repeating fireams were limited to 3 shells only. 3 is the number because it was thought that once you were done firing 3 shots the game would be out of effective range. Therefore you don't need 4. Stupid I know.
Due to the DU NA laws, 2 3/4. 3 or 3 1/2 shotguns cannot hold more than 3 shells! I hold a spare in between my pinky for a quick reload. That alone would usually give me an extra bird! 374 birds and counting this year!

Does mechanical plug mean that the mag tube has to be permanently modified? I recently bought a mossy 590 with the factory 14"bbl for flying in bear country, and although I'd probably buy a longer barrel for hunting with it, I have absolutely no intention of permanently reducing its mag capacity. Is a piece of dowelling sufficient to qualify as a mechanical plug?
