McMillan Compact over bipods?

Has anyone shot their fiberglass compact over pods? I don't use bipods much, but do on occasion. My EDGE won't group inside a pie plate with them and POI shifts. I am in the process of ordering a stock and am debating Classic vs Compact. I know the Classic will work. How about the Compact?

You must have a clearance issue somewhere with your Edge as bipods should not change POI, unless there is a pressure point.

No pressure points. The stock is free floated and pillar bedded, and these stocks are very very stiff. It's harmonics I can almost guarantee it.

Could be but even being free floated, screwing a bipod onto the swivel stud can create a pressure point. I've never seen a gun change POI significantly from a bipod that couldn't be traced back to a pressure point. If there is no pressure from the forestock, I can't see barrel harmonics changing significantly......

I've likely shot a hundred different rifles with bipods and only had an issue with one and it was a pressure point caused when the bipod screw tightened.

I use a bipod on every rifle I own and no issues.

How tight do you have the bipod cinched down? If it's tight that can play havoc.

I'm afraid I can't help. You know I've got two compacts, but years ago I threw away my Harris and went with the Stoney Point Steady Stix II. Much more adaptable to eneven terrain, and no POI issues.

Chuck,

I have played a lot with and without my bipod and yes your POI can change because of the bipod- more so when shooting prone. Obviously check to see that your barrel is properly free floated, shooting prone with a bipod can put downward pressure on your gun causing a pressure point which could be the problem. Maybe you need more clearance in the barrel channel?

When I shoot from a bipod I try to put some forward pressure on the bipod legs (preload) with my shoulder. When I shoot long range this significantly tightens my groups.

With any McMillan stock I don't think that stock design would have much to do with your problems as they all have stiff forearms as you know.

Hope this helps.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Most of the shooting I do now is prone over a pack or with sticks. I could never understand carefully building a rifle to balance between the hands and then adding an ugly, unwieldy, third arm to the end of it. I do however use a Harris swivel pod when setting up for dogs or very occasionally on the bald prairie.

I know McMillan, when building a stock that sees primarily pod use, will alter the fill.

There is nothing running contact with the barrel. I've checked. My only concern with the Compact is it's very slender forearm. From experience, the classic worries me none.
