Looking for some input from people with EXPERIENCE. I have a custom build that has a stock already but I am going to order a new McMillan, either the A5 or the A3, with the biggest difference I can see is the angle of the bottom of the butt stock. I like the look of the A3 better with a more traditional hunting stock angle as opposed to the A5 with the thumb hook. I have had the A5 before and I find the thumb hook is useless for me and it is harder to manipulate the elevation with the flat bottom on the butt stock. Anyone with any input that can shed some light on this for me? Going to order hopefully this week, I know it will likely be the end of the year before I see it, but it won't get here faster if I wait! Thanks!

I recently built a 338 Lapua AI and I am glad I went with an A5. If you are building a lighter rifle then go with the A3. I can post sum pics what I have in a bit but it would help if you said what your build is going to be for.

The build is a Stiller short action chambered in 260 Rem, 26" Benchmark in a heavy varmint contour. Not worried about weight, it will be heavy no matter what and won't be a hunting rifle.

If weight is no issue... and cost, options will make more difference between stocks than the actual stocks. They also make a A3-5 that has the narrower fore end of the A3 on an A5 stock.
Look at the 3-way adjustable stock with the Integral Clamp Bar Adjustable Cheekpiece. You don't need the 3-way butt stock if you are not prone most of the time.
If this s a PRS type build a lot of guys are using the A3-5.

In summery I like the A5 for bench rest and prone with the A3 being easier to hold on the fore end. Maybe an A3-5 would be better for your use.

Really, it is mostly personal preference. For me the A5 simply works the best as I do 99% of my shooting from the prone and I like to use the hook to control with my offhand. I ordered my most recent in April 16 and it arrived in Nov.

Would have to have a look at a manners as well. Very large palm swell and better if you have larger hands. Slightly lighter too in the carbon elite series

I've got both, and prefer the the A3. The thumb hook isn't something I use, and it interferes with using the rear bag for
elevation. Most of my friends feel the same way, but someone must like the A-5s.

I agree with this - I think you should take a look at Manners.

If not though, I also do not like the hook on the A5.

Yes this is exactly what I was thinking. I had the A5 in the past, great stock but I did not use the hook and I always felt that it interfered with the bag for elevation just like you said. Thanks, that seals the deal for me, A3 it is!
