I was wondering where does everyone leave their top vents on the MDT Competition break.

Yesterday I tried with the vents fully open and the performance was not that great with the rifle jumping up quiet a bit, maybe by 10 MOA. I tried again with leaving them half-open and the performance improved and the jump went down to 5MOA. I haven’t tried different combinations but I was expecting that fully open to be the most effective at reducing rifle jump.

I am shooting 6.5CM and using a 6.5CM break.

Let me know, thanks!

I approached mine expecting that halfway would be about right, or else why offer that adjustment range? It's definitely something to try tuning up and down and find the point that works best.

That's a pretty good way to approach an adjustment.
I would ask, do you set the diopter on your scopes the same way?

Scope knobs and dials are already in some position and you're only going to be able to tell the difference looking through the thing, so I start from where they are and hunt for the sharpest setting. Zeroing on a bolt gun start with the bolt out boresighting through the barrel and dialing the crosshairs to the same place before bolt & ammo in and refining the zero. Or sometimes you just have to sight down the edge of a semi's chassis like it was a shotgun and set your first rough zero from that.

My MDT brake was a factory second that came without the screws to attach the shutter on top, so I had to source some and attach it myself and choose where it'd be ahead of first shot and thought 50% open would be wise.

Starting in the middle of an adjustment that seems nebulous is a reasonable and optimal policy.

My comment had the intention of pointing out that people should use this same policy on their scope's diopter setting. Many people adjust it all the way into the scope body and think that is "default, normal, middle" setting, when instead it is an extreme setting that is rarely ideal.

To the topic at hand, I left my MDT green brake at its factory setting. I shot it in comparison back to back with my Spearhead and saw little difference, and I ended up running the Spearhead so I could have the tuner as extra muzzle weight.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Next time I will try shooting it with the ports totally closed and see if what jump I get. Based on what I experienced so far half-open ports is equivalent to 50% improvement over fully-open ports. Moreover, half-open ports MDT comp in 308 gave me better performance (20%) over half-open port MDT comp in 6.5CM. These results are so weird lol I will see what my next range trip will give me

the comp brake has tiny ports, it’s not an aggressive down force, run em wide open, it will only help keep the muzzle down, If your rifle is bouncing 10 Moa prone, it’s not the muzzle brake ports that are causing that.
