MecGar Mag issues

I just bought 3 MecGar mags for my Browning Hi-Power .40 from Brownells recently. I've found that all three will not feed the first round from an open slide. If you insert the mag with the slide closed and then load the round by racking the slide they work fine. It doesn't seem to matter how many rounds are in the mag or what type of ammo. The OEM mags (which I understand are made for Browning by MecGar) don't have this issue.

Browning expert Stephen Camp made these comments in one of the articles on his website. It appears I have a 40 similar to his.

Quoted from.... http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/HiPowers9mmvs40.htm

"Reliability: As most know, Mec-Gar is the maker of the "Browning magazines." This has been the case for quite a few years and has always been so for the forty Hi Power. With my 9mm Hi Powers, either the factory magazine or the Mec-Gar has worked perfectly in quite a few pistols. With my particular forty Hi Power, such was not the case. It showed a strong preference for the factory magazine. Other folks' Hi Powers worked fine with either.

Even though Mec-Gar makes the magazines that come with the Browning guns, the followers are not the same. At least this was the case when I owned my .40 Hi Power. The Browning magazine follower had a "skirt" type arrangement around the bottom of the follower while the Mec-Gar used the traditional "two fingers" protruding or a single oblong post in the middle that the recoil spring attached to. As best as I could observe, the latter two allowed for some tipping forward of the cartridge when the slide hit it from the rear. My pistol would frequently fail to feed on the first shot with a full magazine when using the Mec-Gar magazine, but worked fine with the Browning. I changed the followers in the two magazines and the Browning magazine would cause problems while the Mec-Gar worked perfectly. I've not seen any current Mec-Gar forty caliber followers, so I do not know if this has been changed or not. It should be noted that the Mec-Gar magazines causing me problems in my forty worked perfectly in two other forty Hi Powers with the same ammunition.

Other than that, I've noted no reliability issues with the .40 Hi Power. Extraction and ejection have never been a problem in any .40 Hi Power I've seen or shot personally.

While it may have changed and my main observations are based on but one .40 Hi Power, I did find that the 9mm was more reliable with Mec-Gar magazines. From the Browning-marked ones, there was zero problem with either."

I'm raising this thread from the grave because I need some help with this particular situation.

Bought my new (to me) hi power a couple of months ago and I've been out twice now to shoot it. I love it, although I'm really pining for a 9mm, or a 9mm slide, or a 9mm conversion barrel, whatever I can get my hands on first.

Anyway. My 2 factory mags work fine loading, its the hold open that sucks. I don't know how the 9mm mags work, I've never seen one, but the surface for the slide catch to rest on is very small on the follower. It looks like with repeated use they just wear out and the slide stop no longer budges when the follower rubs up against it, it just slides off and the last shot wont hold open.

I just bought 2 more mags, Mec Gar's from Marstar, and they hold open just fine, but even after only one trip to the range and firing off maybe 100 rounds. I can already see a bit of wear on the followers where they hold the slide stop open. That doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I've notices a bit of a tilt with the mec gar followers compared to the browning branded mags, but it looks like they'll tilt UP more than down, Still haven't had an issue yet with feeding.

The problem comes with releasing the mags. The browning mags release wonderfully, partly due to the fact that they have the little spring at the bottom that holds against the grip and launches the mag out when you hit the release. The mec gar's dont have those. and while I don't think that's an issue, they should just free-fall no problem (I have the mag disconnect removed) this doesn't seem to be the case. After firing a mag, they actually seem jammed in the gun. I hit the release and it feels the same way it does when I push it if no mag is inserted, and the magazine wont budge. I have to really physically strip it out or it wont move, can't even shake or "mag flip" it out. I think the follower might be to blame. Like its pushing against the slide stop, not just from below but also from the side. Like the whole mag is jammed in place because of the follower. Anybody else had issues like these with their 40 hi power?

Anywhere we can get normal factory followers? I'd love to order a few to fix my mags :/

Mec Gar on the left, Factory on the right. You can see the upper left portion on the factory follower looks almost as though it's chipped off. On the other follower you can see it starting, and that's after about 3 or 4 mags shot through it. Doesn't look like it bodes well. :/

I just got an older cz75 and while I haven't tried them apparently there is an issue with the mecgars fitting in them. Maybe take the pistol apart and see if they are binding inside the magwell. You may have to file inside to allow them to drop free. Someone else has mentioned to me putting them in a vice and changing the outside dimension of the mag as well.
Good luck.

Took it into the shop today to have a look. Starting to think it might be the slide stop lever that is the culprit. Looks like it may have been modified at some point. Like it's both chewing up the followers, and because its modified an dprobably shorter than it should be, might be jamming on the side of the follower instead of sitting on top, creating that damage even in the brand new mag. It's the first thing I'll try. Need to find one for less than $160 now.. sheesh.

Try Brownells. They seem to have a fair selection of BHP parts and their shipping rates to Canada are reasonable (be sure to specify US Postal Service rather than a courier)
