I am looking for a battery powered bullhorn or megaphone I can use to run my Ipod on. I can't seem to find one that can except a patch cord from an external device. I have all the calls I need so I don't really want to spend the hundreds of extra dollars needed to get a foxpro, not that I wouldn't want one, I just don't see the need as all I require is the speaker and docking stations just are not loud enough. What have you found that works best.

Get a PA horn that has a mic input or mic built into it and modify it with a jack for your ipod or hold the ipod up to the mic. A small 12V 7A alarm panel battery should run it for quite a while. Ebay has lots of them listed.

"12V Loud Horn electronic siren 5 Sounds PA systerm MIC" $35

just be sure the one you get has the PA built in and is not an alarm siren.

I have a Foxpro now, but a couple years ago I went down the same path as you, with great success. I got my megaphone from ebay and a couple small parts from Radio Shack.
I tapped in to the existing microphone with a 1/8 jack, when you plug in an external source (ie. MP3 player) it would override the microphone and use the external device as an input.
I cut the end out of a cheap camo bag and replaced it with a mesh to avoid dampening the sound or eliminating the higher frequencies needed in a caller. The end result was an inexpensive and very effective caller.
Here are some pics I took during the build.

Good info guys, I'll wonder into The Source and check it out. Didn't think I could modify the mic to except the plugin, but that's why I asked. Hey Pyd, is that the pylepro megaphone and if so do you recommend it. I had my eye on that one. The pmp55r to be exact.

Hey April, I thought of getting one too but quickly dismissed the idea thinking that it would be just too big and heavy to be lugging around in the bush.

Mine is from "Western Safety", I don't recall the price, but it was pretty cheap.
A portable stereo will not meet your needs, you have to have a "horn" speaker to duplicate the high frequencies needed to call critters. That home made unit is louder than my top of the line Foxpro.
If you decide to add a 1/8 jack to anything, just let me know, I will help.

Thanks Pyd. I'm looking to purchase everything I should need hopefully on Monday,if I run into some problems I'll contact you.

Check out varmint al's el cheapo electronic caller, I built one of these and it works fantastic, all for less than 100 dollars.

^^^I have seen this sight and it looks great. There is a link to You Tube for a guy that buillt one.
Slick, could you tell me (us) where you purchased your components for the El Cheapo?

Edit: I see Forest City Surplus in London has some megaphone/speakers.

He lists exactly where you can buy all components but seeing as we no longer have radio shack I hit up my local surplus store (forest city surplus if you want to google it) and got the megaphone for 15 bucks or so, had to stop in at a radio shack when i was in the states to buy the mini amp tho as I couldn't find anything to work other than the one he lists. That was another 20 bucks or so then I had an old mp3 player laying around (anything with aux output will work).

I then went to the source and got a connector and soldered (sorry if spelling is wrong) the red and black wires onto the connector and plus it all in and presto it works amazingly!

PM me if you want more details.

"The Source" is Radio shack

Yes but they carry slightly different products. For example the source (at least all the local ones here) do not carry mini amplifiers so I had to go to the states for it.

Here's an update. Just bought the pylepro pmp45r megaphone and tried it out. Although fairly loud (the box says 1000 yard range) I was hoping for a little louder but that may be due to the fact that I did not yet charge the battery so that could make a difference. I was also surprised to find out that when I plugged the Ipod into where the hand held mic would go, using a patch cord, it works. No need to rig up a second jack, it's all ready to go. Those a**hole crows and coyotes won't know what hit em.;)
