Well I succumbed to my buying impulse today... Saw Meridian Color GPS for a nice price and had to buy it. Anyone here uses one? Good, bad or ugly?

I wanted to improve on my Etrex and it seemed like it was all I could use and then some...

Well although it has more stuff to offer, I think the garmin will hold lock as well or better in heavy bush with little or no view of the sky. Could be a good test to run and report on. Don't have 'em going at the same time though. I would walk a course with one, then the other.

I usually use Trimble's for my profession, but there are times when recreational grade GPS is good enough, and then I use Garmin's. Just curious as to what you're getting with your new GPS that you don't get with a Garmin.

The Etrex as fine to get me in and out but was the model with no map on dislay. The meridian allows me to view maps on the screen adn upload waht ever area map I want on it (provided I buy it, of course...). I got it dirt cheap and if it does not suit my needs I'll turn it over to a "geocaching" buff in no time...

Well I've been playing with it for a while now and it performs just fine for what I need. I used it on the road and in the bush and have found that it reamins locked on to sats even under pretty heavy canopy. Accuracy is good for my needs and it is quick to refresh. I bought the Mapsend TOPO for it and while not the most up-to-date data sets, it is still good enough t plan a hunting or prospecting trip with good detail and accurate ground contour.

Overall I'm very pleased.
