Merkel 140 AE .500 Nitro Express

Calgary shooting center has or HAD them in stock.
10 G base line model.
Nice rifle , found it points qiuck. Shoulders nice.

I think the caliber would be to bad to shot. Pricey
Even reloading ,bullets are 3 bucks a pop . Plus over 100gr of powder..
Bullet Diameter is .510 not .500

I have a 140AE in .450-400 3". It has served me well. I found it well built, accurate, and reliable. Although many would find it pricey, it is a good value for the quality compared to other currently manufactured double rifles on the market. There is a lot to learn and understand about shooting double rifles that is very different than shooting typical bolt action rifles. Do your research, but I predict if you want a big bore double the Merkel 140AE will not disappoint.

500 Nitro Express is Not prohibited as far as I know. Unless the caliber itself is banned, it should be OK. If the energy figures are the only criteria for "banning", it is well under the 10,000 Joule threshold -
570 gr (37 g) (factory load, cordite) 2,150 ft/s (660 m/s) 5,850 ft⋅lbf (7,930 J)
440 gr (29 g) 1,560 ft/s (480 m/s) 2,375 ft⋅lbf (3,220 J)
570 gr (37 g) (smokeless, Kynoch) 2,150 ft/s (660 m/s) 5,860 ft⋅lbf (7,950 J)

I have used the 140A, non-ejector double trigger (the only way to go) in .470 for many hunts and with much success.
I do like it. It balances well, is durable, points for me and is not a heavy rifle to tote.

It had a doubling issue that took a few trips to repair - a micro burr in the trigger group that was hard to find and a rare issue.
I do like it a lot. For me, when the butt was extended a bit, it pointed like my arm.
The one issue that I have advised others, is that the pistol grip is too tight of a downturn. With a relatively hard recoiling gun, the rear of the trigger guard raps your knuckle pretty hard.

I put a rubber rear guard buffer on mine. My hands are large, but not gorilla like.
If I was younger I would have a new butt made for it with a lazier bend in the grip, or a straight stock.
In discussions with Ralph Martini, he said that is one of the things he redesigned on the model 88 double for Heym ....a more open curve on the grip area to prevent the bite.

Overall, it is a wonderful rifle.

very good rifle and very good caliber.

My 140ae in 470 is a beauty. Functions perfect and looks bloody nice .

As farshot said if I am not holding it tight the trigger guard can whack my middle finger. Smarts a bit when it does that. I imagine the 500recoil it would do the same. I have horrible tennis elbow right now so my grip isn't very good, hopefully once I can grip it firmer it won't be an issue. My 458 Lott does the same thing.

The Merkel was easy to load for and shoots both A frames and woodleighs great. It was regulated with federal sledgehammer solids from the factory I think the test target said.
