Well, Christmas has come early for me this year! I had to treat myself to a present that I could never ask someone to get me.

I had bought this used Lapua sometime ago, was in decent shape, 700P model and the HS stock with 3 round mag. Not a bad platform to get off the ground with, issues being, a few marks here and there, muzzle brake removed and left rough. Because I want a rifle with some bang past 1200 meters and out to the 1800 meter mark, I thought the Lapua would be a fun project.

Now, the real problem is, I have already got an HS stock on my .308 and I like it very much, but, we cant have two of the same looking rifles now can we? The one and only complaint I have with the HS stocks is that the sling stud doesn't seem to stand up so well, so I thought the Lapua may really do it in. I was originally thinking the MDT Tac 21 chassis, as I really love the look of them, they are quite comfortable and they're modular. What's not to love right? Well, the price overall by the time I am done adding the Magpul butt-stock I wanted, the pistol grip, the scope mount etc..... that I pictured, it was going to be around the 1500-1600 mark before shipping. Although I don't consider that ridiculous for something that fits perfectly and looks awesome to boot, there is nowhere to just throw one together in this configuration in the area to see if it was what I want and envisioned. That is crazy to me, to shell out that kind of cash for something that you may not even like at all....... So a handy trip to Wolverine Supplies in Virden showed me a few more stock options, I told the fellow that I really wanted an MDT, they don't carry that line, so I checked out the Dolphin, AICS AX, AICS AW. Now, the Dolphin was pretty cool I must say, and I always thought the AICS was ugly, but the salesman convinced me to try the AX to see what I thought, hesitantly, I got behind the stock in the prone position. It was awesome!! This was changing my narrow vision rapidly! I figured "aw, what the hell" and tried the even uglier version.... the AW, now this.... I really liked the feel of! I can now see what the hype is about, this kicked my build into gear ..... I then looked through a glass selection, which included the likes of Vortex, Schmidt and Bender, (had previously looked through Bushnell Tactical, Nightforce, Leupold, I priced out a few more items and decided to sleep on it, after-all, they are very fair on their shipping prices at the Wolverine.

That night on the EE as luck would have it, I came across a used ACIS AW. Fate much? So I scooped it up at a price I couldn't say no to. Saving roughly 300 off retail for not a mark on it, feel kinda bad for Wolverine putting that time into me on the sale?? Well don't, it just allowed me to make a few more accessory purchases for the build, from them of course. So after a couple of phone calls to them, checking and rechecking information and specs, I ordered my scope, a muzzle brake, a new drag bag, 10 rd AICS mag, bipod, new muffs, My kit was inbound! When I got everything into my hands, assembly was on. The stock fit as expected, nice and solid with very sturdy mounting points for the support systems, the rings were very snug going onto the rail (but in my mind was a good thing), the brake didn't fit as I believe I may have told them the wrong thread pitch, the optics were beautifully clear and exactly as I had hoped. I did slightly modify the check rest, put some foam on and wrapped in electrical tape (bubba'd a bit, but feels great). I took an chance on a "Scorpion" bipod, but I will be changing that for a Harris ASAP, I really don't like how it clicks and rattles about. I don't believe it will stand up to the punishment I will certainly be putting it through. For some reason, now I am thinking these look pretty cool... kinda like the so ugly is beautiful thing going on here..... (think guy with ugly kids, who keeps shoving the pictures in your face)

The List:

700p- .338Lapua
AICS AW stock
10 rnd AICS Mag
Badger Ordnance Brake
Kyle Anderson 20 MOA Base
Burris Zee Rings (additional 10moa cant)
Vortex 4-16 FFP- MOA/MOA
VISM dual Drag Bag
Harris 6-9 (coming soon)

I know many of you are wondering why I would go Vortex with all the options I was looking at for glass. I really like the set up of the Vortex, it has everything I have been looking for in an optic (FFP, matching reticle/turrets and good tracking) and virtually everyone I have talked to has had excellent reviews to give me on its tracking abilities as well as the glass quality and overall construction. I did not see a Nightforce out-doing this at double the price for the same options. When I was at Milcun this year, I seen first hand that they still had "click of the day" adjustments just as everything else had, so I didn't see the benefit of "up-grading". I found both of them to be very competitive in the glass and given magnification ranges, and I don't typically shoot over 10X anyways.

I need to thank Wolverine Supplies for helping me with this little project, the customer service I have received thus far has been impeccable and they have earned a future customer out of me. They took the time to show me multiple items and options and I did not once feel rushed or pressured to buy. I know I still have a few bugs to work out with it before its completely "Range Ready" but cant wait to get out and stretch this baby out!

few things..

1) why did u bubba the cheek rest?? are they not adjustable view that screw right beside the thing?? ;)

2) wtf is going on with that muzzle brake in the 2nd pic?!?!? its like 1/2 theaded on and turned down? haha i dont get it :/

Nice job ,

Can you tell me what markings are on the magazine , I thought the only 10rd single stack long action mags , where for 300WM ?

the reason I say that , is I have 10rd 300WM mags as well as 5rd versions .

Cheers Chris

Like I said, the muzzle brake is not correct, I am getting the correct one shortly.... just for looks at the moment.... was the incorrect thread pitch. I will be getting the correct one shortly. It is the 300wm mag. They accidentally sent me it instead of the Lapua one. He told me there was a 10rd option though.... I emailed to them letting them know they had made a mistake. I know they will fix it. Just wanted to see what it would look like put together.... got a little excited to see what the final product will resemble.

The cheek rest is now padded. I found the plastic to be uncomfortable, I shot a TRG at Milcun, found the plastic to give a slight jar to the jaw, Height is good, just wanted a little cushion for the pushin'!

Oh ya, I think your correct.... kind of a weird way to remove it I thought..... screws on and off correctly, but just horribly ugly. I can see anywhere where it has cause damage internally on the barrel, no heat marks or cracking or anything...hopefully will be alright.

Nice looking build. I have the AI AX chassis on it's way to me, I am getting pretty anxious to see it too. Mine will be in the lowly little ol' 260 though, no 338 Lapua for me…yet.

I have a feeling I know what that's from... What do you wanna bet someone used red LT on it, and couldn't get it off? Remember folks, no matter what you see, Red Loctite is freakin' permanent and will take a torch and a whole lotta torque to get that sucker off. If you're ever told to use it, get the blue non-permanant stuff. Not saying you did it, I'm just saying I've seen guys out there who recommend using red, not knowing what they are talking about....
