I met Bubba today, or at least his cousin. I was looking at a nice US model of 1917 when the guy next to me said that was they type of gun he was interested in so he could deactivate it and hang it as a decoration in his cabin. Ughhh.
 
You should have "deactivated" his genitalia, so he never has the chance to breed his evil genes.:mad:

I did exactly that when I was like 18....so stupid. At least it didn't have the original military stock on it, but I did everything else. It was a Enfield No4m1

It was tough, honestly. But I cringed and then told him to buy something else, please! It's not that I'm against deactivating ANY rifle, I deactivated a LE MkIII* but it had such a pitted barrel I would never have fired it. Under the wood and properly welded shut it sits proudly on my mantle. But This:

is a beautiful 1917. The auction is today and I am afraid he'll buy something. Why can't he buy one of the crap black powder antiques and be happy in his cabin with that????
 
Good News

I bought that 1917 for $200 and I got an old Winchester Model 1910 for $100. The other milsurps went at prices that suggest they won't be deactivated by Bubba. A Commission rifle went for close to $400 and a less than mint Ross Cadet went for $170. I think Bubba's cousin was skunked :)

Now if only the transfer would go though, mine and the guy after me had our transfers held up and sent to New Brunswick. Strange.

Congratulations! I'm glad that Model of 1917 will be going to a good home!:)

Bubba story with happy ending.

Attended the Lund's auction here in Victoria Tuesday night. Bumped into Bubba, a nice enough chap, but does horrible things to guns.
Anyway, he mentioned he and his buddy were going to bid on a matching C No4 MKI* Longbranch (95L) and split it up. His buddy wanted the furniture to complete a cutdown, dewat No.4 and he was to get the barrel/action that he had cutdown wood for! I could not see this happen so I outbid them to save the poor LB. Should have it home soon.

Isn't it sad when we bid to "save" inanimate objects? I mean, I am deliriously happy with the 1917, it was a Canadian "Lend/Lease" gun, red paint and C-Broad arrow, but how much would I have spent to save it? I don't know. I thank whatever deity you or I pray to that Bubba is a cheap bastard who wants cheap guns:)

ps. If anyone has any advice on a Winchester 1910, operating manual or where to find ammo (I know it's not made anymore), I'd be grateful.
