Metal checkering

Does anybody have experience checkering on a cylinder pin. Not sure how you would do this with a checkering file. The angles are around 120 degrees so you cant just spin the piece. The one I am trying to fix is all mashed from someone using plyers on it...

That probably is knurling... done in a few seconds.

I would be surprised if anyone would be able to do that with a couple of files.

Agree with guntech. Knurling expands the diameter, so comparing the dia. to that of an untreated area should confirm.
