My hunting partner took one of his deer from this fall to a german butcher and had some mettwurst sausage made. His wife made some after a day of hunting by cooking it in beer until the beer boiled away. That was pretty good with some perogies after a long day of hunting.

I've never had metturst before and have a couple of packages in my freezer. I believe it's cured and can be eaten as is, but does anyone have any other ideas of how to prepare this for a warm meal, and what might go with it as a side dish? I'd like to try it again but it's so damn cold out I want it to warm my belly. :p

Mmm, your spaghetti sauce / garlic bread idea sounds very tasty. I might have try that soon. Thanks for the ideas.

Man.... I miss Mettwurst sandwiches.

Two 1/4" thick slices of Landbrot (the true test of a potential bride, according to both my grandfathers is a perfectly straight 1/4" thick slice of good German bread, Dresdener Landbrot being a family favorite) with a smear of Lowensenf mustard on each slice, some onion, a few slices of Mettwurst, and some German Butter Cheese.

Gramma used to pack a cooler full of those, some Landjaegers, apples, more cheese and cold drinks when Grampa and I used to go off into the Foot Hills outside of Claresholm to shoot gophers when I was a young boy.
