Hi,

i just found a guy that have a mexican M98 short to sell; are they reliable? Does it worth 220$; he said its in good condition?

thanks

I agree, I wouldn't sell mine for that price. Has it been sporterised? Many were when they first came into Lever Arms about 25 years ago. They were going for $150 back then and were in VG to EXC condition.

Beautifully finished with first class polishing and a translucent blue job that looked like you could dive into it. They made great sporters, with very little work and were quite accurate with commercial ammunition. One other thing about them, the stocks were acually a liminate of some Mexican hardwood and very well finished. I would rate the Mexican small ring mausers on par with any European mausers in similar condition.

They are also interesting in the way they blended some US Springfield looks into their design, such as the striker extension for grasping on the bolt, but mostly pure mauser. If it's sporterised, in VG or better condition and you need a hunting rifle, it will do nicely, if it's in original condition, bonus. bearhunter

Mexican Mauser

Believe me, I'm no Mexican Mauser expert having only one in my collection, but is yours in 7m/m Mauser or .30-06? Model 1936's were in 7X57 and Model 54's in '06 . Thats about all I know about these beritto-burners. Actually gotta admit I'm quite impressed with my all original 1936. Might even keep it awhile!
Cheers

I had a model 54 in 30-06, it was pure M 98. It was a great shooter and functioned smoothly. Mea culpa, I bubb'ed it, I cut the forend back but left the top handguard, used the original sling swivels. I used it for a truck gun, should have kept it.

I was quite lucky with mine, I had the chance to cherry pick from 200 of them. I bought 10 for the discount = 1 free. Only two of them were minty and in those days 30-06 rifles were still in much demand, so sporterised the 8 that were in VG only condition. I seem to remember that all of them had matching numbers.
Lucked out at the Chilliwac gun show this spring and found a minty bayonet (really tough to find). Now all I need is a sling and scabbard frog.

There were some mod 36 rifles available then but, they weren't in good condition. At the very best, they would have been rated GOOD with 50% bores. Ahhhh, Lever Arms back in the mid seventies, those were some golden times for milsurps. bearhunter

I certainly wouldn't let my 1941 Mexican Mauser go for that. It's the only one I have ever managed to get my hands on down in my area of Nova Scotia. It's chambered for 7 X 57 and shoots absolutely wonderful. I bought it with the intentions of having it professionally sporterized like my swedish M38 but it was so nice with all the original arsenal markings on the stock etc. that I have never had the heart to cut it up. I bought the reloading dies and a few boxes of commercial ammo and have shot and reloaded for it a bit. Nice old gun. Good deal on that one if the bore is still in good shape.

Mauser

Hey goldidig, believe your 41 Mexican Mauser would technically be a Model 1936, which was the last model Mexico chambered in 7X57. Sounds nice, glad you left it original. Does yours have a brass rack number disk on butt?

Geoff

Hi Longbranch, I just dug it out of storage to check it out and I was wrong. It is a 1940 not a 41. I see where the disc was but it is not there now. I never notice this before. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. It DOES have white stencilled arsenal markings on it though with a 1" high number " 3 " right under where the little ID disc used to be. On the left cheek piece there are also 3/4" high white stenciled letters painted on thet look like as follows ZI-32-3. Lovely little short rifle with the usual stock dings but no repairs to the wood and it's totally original finish. I was considering selling it but probably should hang onto it as a conversation piece and occasional shooter. It's the only one I have ever seen in my circles of travel and I meet a lot of fellow gun nuts so they must be getting pretty scarce.
