The only personal firearms I have seen in all the years of going to Mexico have been 1911 pistols. Now in Guatamala I have seen a good number of farmers with shotguns but thats about it. whether any of them were legal who knows.

No it is not possible....Mexico is even worse that here as far as gun laws are concerned. No 'military' calibers allowed for civilian ownership. Anything that shoots 9mm, .45, etc. is out of the question for anyone but the Army.
