MFX vs FTX

OK maybe I am missing something obvious but I have searched and found very little regarding the Hornady FTX and MFX bullets.

I am thinking about loading some of these up for the 30-30. Cabelas lists them (although the FTX shows as back-orderable).

The price for the MFX is $50 for 50.

The FTX is $46 for a 100 count.

Anyone try these out?
Opinions on FTX vs MFX etc?
Any other options vs the Hornady solution?

Thanks!

The MFX is a mono bullet (all copper with the soft tip so it can go in tubular mags - basically Hornady's GMX bullet for tube mags) and the FTX is your (traditional) lead core, jacketed with the flex tip (or the Interlock for tube mags).

In a 30-30 I would NOT use the MFX unless you are hunting somewhere that lead is banned. You need a fair bit of velocity to get these to mushroom properly (read magnum velocities - minimally 1800 fps to get any expansion and over 2400 to expand as (envisioned) which just about the muzzle velocity of the factory MFX 30-30 load)

They both will work you just don't want to shoot a mono bullet too slow. Both are meant for a tub mag. I wouldn't consider it unless I had to use lead free just on the price factor alone. I load the FTX and LVR for a Win 94. No other powder really touches the fps you get from it in the 30-30 currently. Also LVR is one of the powder you can find pretty easily now also :)

I was just looking in my Hornady manual 9th edition and it stayed the velocity range for the 140 monoflex designed for the 30-30 was 1550-2550 fps. Just using hornady's online ballistic calculator with a mv of 2300, it will be 1510 fps at 300 yards. The mono flex bullet designed for the 308marlin express performance window is stated as 1650-2800. So it would appear that the the 308 ME bullet is a bit harder. Hope that helps with some if your question.

A test I witnessed on the weekend doesn't agree with that. the test was with a 45-70 using Leverevoution Factory ammo. The Mono bullet opened up perfectly (you couldn't have done it better by hand). According to the Hornady ballistic info for the slug, it should have slowed to 1600 fps or thereabouts when it hit the stump. Expansion was complete & uniform at that velocity.
