So is there any user feedback on MGI Hydra? There are some old reviews with opposite conclusion but no follow-up reviews, no torture tests. I really like the idea of 7.62x39 on AR platform, with optional caliber change kits. But is it truly reliable? Does anybody have experience apart of test shooting? Where does this rifle stand in Canadian 7.62x39 world which consist of SKS, Mini 30, XCR and CZ?

I don't even know if anyone's imported a Hydra kit to Canada yet.

Where does it stand? It's restricted. So it's generally less appealing than the SKS, Mini 30, XCR or Cz.

But, for those who want a multi-role AR platform, or a survival AR platform, MGI seems to have an excellent niche product for them.

Does it work? I'd want a few thousand rounds through one before saying "yes"

I think there are at least two places that have been selling Hydras for at least half a year I suppose. So they are in Canada.

As for restricted vs non-restricted.. Well it's also about ugly disproportional 18.5" stick vs barrel length that appeals to you. Hate the look of CZ and XCR with non restricted barrel, while generally those guns looks fine with shorter barrels.

Yep, AK mags are uber good. That's one of big selling points for me.

who is selling? I just asked a vendor about getting one with no reply

Dante sports and I think the was anothe small store in NB or somewhere East coast, can't remember the name. IRG US site also had it yesterday. So it's not a problem to buy, problem is to find out real user feedback before byuing. Some say bolt is not good, other post I found was complaining about feeding from native ak mag and ak well. But those are old posts from 2012 or so. Seems that US users don't fancy a lot 7.62x39 ammo and Hydra is not that popular. But this year we see all this new hype, why? New production? New marketing team?

One site I looked at awhile back had a rave review initially. Months (?weeks) later the author rescinded his endorsement due to quality control issues in subsequent
production.
If my recollection is right, the company seemed to take a break, and now they're back. I don't know if it's under new management or what.

Anyone pulled the trigger yet? It's so tempting even as proper 7.62x39 AR platform alone, not to mention all caliber change goodies. Btw they have just released glock mag well.

What's the big deal about ak mags ? Why so different or better than the cz/vz
Are you asking why AK mags different/bette than vz 58 mags? They are different. AK steel mag is the most reliable mags for 7.62x39. And if with 10 rounds you can do fine with LAR mags it won't work when/if you switch to 30 rounds. As for vz 58 mags... well, the only reason cz is popular in Canada is the prohibited status of AK. And because AK is not prohib in USA they naturally prefer AK mags over CZ.
Or are you asking why modular AR is different than VZ 58? First is modular, multi-caliber modern platform with no proven records of reliability or unreliability, second is cold war time design (IMHO is very weak offspring of AK and STG) in one caliber with proven record of failures.
Bottom line is that who needs VZ/CZ (gun or mag) if you have AK (gun or mag). Or better two... :)
