It is with profound sadness that I pass on that one of this country's finest precision gun builders and one of only a very small number of barrel makers - Mick McPhee has died. He apparently lost his battle with cancer. Please join me in expressing sincere condolences to the family of an outstanding marksman, gunsmith and friend.

Definitely one of Canada's finest gunsmiths who was honorable and a pleasure to deal with. Great loss to the shooting community!

Please pass on condolences to family and link to funeral home if possible.

Kind regards,

Peter Hirschfeld Dobson

RIP Mr. McPhee. Sincere condolences to family and friends. Had a chance to meet and speak with him at the Frosty Farky and few years back. A true gentleman.

I was speaking with Paul Reibin on Saturday, and he told me that Mick Likely would not get out of the hospital.
Sad, he was a very well respected and tremendous man in the shooting world.
Another great shooter and gunsmith gone to quieter ranges.

RIP.

Had many conversations with Mick, what shock to see this post. My deepest condolences and sympathy for the McPhee family, sorry for your loss.

When I first started gunsmithing, I was mentored by Art Bourne and worked for Bob Hobbs at Guncraft in Kamloops. Mick was one of my favourite customers and I counted on him for arcane info; especially on Colt and Winchester arms. Mick was an impressively knowledgeable hobbyist who would tackle anything and the results were always impressive. In later years, I moved on but always stayed in touch. I was not at all surprised when Mick started gunsmithing and knew he would continue to impress with his ability and his inventiveness. He was a skilled workman, a store of knowledge, and a heck of a nice guy. He always approached every project with the intent of achieving perfection and often, he came as close as one could. Always curious, quick to laugh, and pleasant to speak with, Mick was a guy I truly liked.
Mick's passing is a reminder to me that we (I) have to make more of an effort to not be so reclusive. As the saying goes, time waits for no man. To all of Mick's friends in Kamloops, my condolences. Regards, Bill

Mick was a legend. Pic taken Feb 2011. Mick is on the right (that’s not me on the left - I took the pic tho!). I really enjoyed his Pratt & Whitney rifling machine.

Mick was very humble man.
I knew him for about 20 years and visited him often even to talk or to borrow some shooting and gunsmith magazines that he collected.
I often helped him once in a while mostly to flute the barrels, inlet the stocks or make the aluminum action sleeves
(my milling machine was bigger than his).
I was most likely the only one person that he was comfortable to lend his reamers to.
His deteriorating health was obvious to anyone that knew him but he would never divulge it.
RIP Mick....

Mick McPhee was a true gentleman. When I started shooting F-Class he was amongst a number of the fine folks at the KTSA who shared his knowledge and gave advice and, in doing so, made me feel welcome and made me a better shooter. As time went by I commissioned Mick to make a number of fine rifles - needless to say his work was always first-class as one would expect from a craftsman like him. His passing is a great loss. Rest in Peace Sir.
