What mid-length Mauser 98 variants exist and what ones are the best for modifications into a hunting rifle? From looking at what others have said, the Mauser G33/40 type action is one of these shorter actions made to accommodate 8x57 Mauser. Other than this, which other mid-length Mauser 98 actions were produced? Were any made in the commercial actions? I'm thinking a 7x57 on a mid-length Mauser 98 would be a nice hunting rifle for deer.

The Yugo M48's are an intermediate length action and so are the Turk 1903's. I've built a couple of rifles on the Turk 1903 action for intermediate length rounds like the .257 Roberts and they turned out excellent.

Just don't hack up any complete military rifles for the action though.

Not my plan to hack up a military rifle, I'm looking for a used sporterized or lightly customized but usable as is rifle. Just trying to get a feel for what I should be looking for.

There are also lots of older BSA sporters built on Mauser receivers withouth thumb notches and they are very good for building newish sporter rifles from. I picked up a nasty looking 7x57 and having stripped it decided I may get a year or two from the barrel but can later rebarrel to almost anything!
