I wanted to get a short length of rail for my rifle, but didn't want to blow a fortune. I have no desire to have my whole rifle tacticool'ed up with rails.

I settled on a Midwest Industry Tactical Light mount. I've got it in hand, and am about to mount it, when I looked online for a quick picture.

Its 50/50 which way people seem to mount it. Either with the rails pointing forward and the rails pointing backwards over the sides of the stock . I prefer the second method, and I'm just wondering if anyone has one, and how they mounted it.

Here's 2 links to the various methods. Sorry, I can't post attachments yet.

To be honest, even though it looks cool, no matter how you mount it, it's in the way of your gas block wrench for when you remove the gas plug. You're probably better off just mounting a short section of rail to the side of your stock. It's super easy to do.

With the rails pointed to the back ya still can get to the gas plug an lock if ya want to pull the piston to clean it.Thats the way I have it mounted on my one cqb shorty that I have done up.

I think I'll be mounting it backwards with the rails pointing to the stock. I've never heard of closing it to clean the barrel, I usually just turn it upside down... might be easier to close it.

Just out of curiousity, how did you mount the rails? Where did you find the rail segments? Would it be possible to do on a VLTOR stock?

I will have 4" rail segments made and anodized with a suitable mounting profile for standard stocks. They will be available on the M14.ca web site. ASAP.

How does one go about mounting them? What sort of "surgery" does it require? I'm thinking this might be a better option if I wanted to attack something more securely. How much does a short section of rail cost?

I sourced them from one of the site sponsors, I wanna say Wolverine? 3" or 4" sections of ergo rail. Super easy to mount, just lay them out so that they are parallel to the bore, mark for where the screws go and drill your stock. The came with threaded backing plates that I JB-welded inside the stock then loctited the screws in. You could do it on a Vltor stock for sure, I did it on my USGI stockand the Vltor is just a modded USGI. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.
