I'm am wanting to get into the long range game for hunting and target shooting and I want to start off on either MOA or MIL but I want to make the right choice. Done a lot of reading but cannot decide! Is there a major preference to one or the other in the "tactical" world and target shooter? Law enforcement and military? Just curious to see what everyone is using

Thanks guys

MOA is relatively easy to use with imperial measurements since 1MOA corresponds to approximately 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 etc. mils on the other hand is unit independent, one mil at any range is equivalent to one one thousandth of that range. Naturally, this makes metric calculations much easier, since metric also uses base ten increments.

I like mils. I just find it easier converting things in my head when its all in 1/10 scales. It works best when you use your range in meters. Ex @476m one mil is 47.6cm and 1/10 of a mil(which is a click on most mil scopes) is 4.76cm. Where if you have a distance that isn't rounded of to the nearest hundred yards and using moa its just a little bit more math. Its completely just preference but whatever you chose I strongly recommend having the turret adjustments match the reticle. It gets a little bit more tricky when you have a mil dot reticle with a MOA turret.

Speak MOA and use it when around folk that think and speak in yards feet and inches.
Speak Mils and use it when around folk that think and speak in meters cm and mm.

I use both, yet I favor mils when by myself, shooting and coyote hunting.

It is only an issue if you have a spotter speaking corrections in the measurement your turret doesn't have.

Neither has a definite advantage over the other.
