Mildot question

I'm not 100% familiar with the layout of the focal planes inside a scope so hopefully someone can help with this. If I have a mildot scope (that isn't FFP) and lets say it is calibrated to 10X. If the scope is set to 20X is each dot 1/2 mil and if it's set to 5X is each dot 2 mil?

I believe you're going in the wrong direction. As the image gets smaller, and the dots stay the same, they cover more of the image, making their value higher.

Also, with calibration at 10X, I think you have to go in multiples of 10, not halves and doubles. So, at 1X each dot would be double the value, and at 20X, each dot would be half. Somebody may yet correct me on this.
 
Yes I did have it backwards, I corrected it in my original question. Maybe I should try clamping the scope in a vice and trying a few know sized objects at different magnifications.

Each tab is 1 meter at 100 meters. That's why you can get the distance if you know the size of the target by zooming to bracet the object within tabs. So if you zoom to 8x at 800 meters, one tab is one meter. Zoom 16x at 800 meters two tabs is 1 meter. It should be 3.5 MOA per tab at that point.
 
the Mil Dots are not 1 Mil in diameter; there is (ytpically) 1 Mil between them. The thickness varies from 0.3 mils to 0.1 mils usually.

Make sure that you buy a scope with turrets that match the reticle. If you have a miliradian reticle and 1/4 MOA clicks, the reticle isn.t much use unless you're good with multiply/dividing by 3.44.
