Mildot vs. Duplex...

I about to buy a new scope ... I'm new to reloading and new to long range shooting... So I'm wondering If I will go hunting with my rifle and do some long range shooting with it... Is worth to get a mildot reticule or a duplex is ok... I mean What could be the advantages about taking a duplex...

i dunno if there's necessarily an advantage with the duplex..they are more readily available but if you have a rangefinder than i'm not sure you need a mil-dot..guess it depends how you shoot if you use the dots to aim off instead of using clicks?
 
The mildot will give you a consistent hold over point compared to estimating holdover for bullet drop. A ballistic reticle such as Leupold and Burris offer is similar, but it has a progressively spaced cross marks that approximate the ever increasing bullet drop at increasing yardage. Something to look at.
 
It all depends on what you spend and who you buy it from. If you are spending the money on a Leupold and want to get a ranging reticle, you are better off with the TMR, but if you are shooting at known distances or if you are getting a range finder, the extra cost of the Leupold mildot or TMR "new" is not worth it, you can get yourself nice base and rings for that cost. That being said, you coudl buy one of the Bushnell 3200 or 4200 series scope that come with a mil-dot, much cheaper but quality is outstanding. Again it depends on what you are planning on doing and how much you want to spend. The Bushnell 3200 10X is in my opinion the best scope on the market for the $$$ and it comes with mil-dot.
 
Seriously I was thinking about the Bushnell Elite 6500
2.5x16x42mm... But was hesitating between duplex and mildot.. Her in my town we have a 600 yard shooting range so I wanted to get so good magnification and In the wood for hunting there is mostly some dirty wood.. so 2.5x16x42mm what was interested me more... I've seen It and damn the lens are clear... Sounds like a great scope.. The only thing I'm wondering if the tracking is good on it...

I have the 6500 4.5x30x50mm mill dot,I would get the mill dot because if you dont want to use it than just dont use it,but when you get on to mill dot you can get your range on close enough for a hunting shot which can make all the difference in a good hunt and a great hunt!!

I still have some more testing to do with mine,(only shot it twice) so far it works great tracks perfect,and ranges well,I like it Im shure you will too

All my LR rigs have been mounted with Mark4 M1 Leupold scopes with mildot reticles. I like the ranging ability (shot many field shoots) having had to carry out said ranging tasks. I also like the mildot for leading the fig 11 target during the match 62, "The Mover" since the mildot is distinct and allows me to favour the wind by keeping the mildot on the leading edge or inside the leading edge depending on the wind patterns deviating from the dominant pattern (before the match).

Those of you who have shot this match at Provincial and National levels will know that you should be spending your preparation time establishing the dominant wind pattern before / while you move your kit on the mound.

Okay, that aside.... I'm not shooting that many sniper matches these days, so I kept a Duplex Mark4 M1 handy since I like the fatter reticle in low(est) light conditions. I prefer the duplex on my serious (read: overseas) applications for CQB since your eye will immediately find the reticle and get you a faster sight picture (mildots are too fine in a hurry). So on my Service Rifle rig (also used for CQB matches since it's got a 16" mid length) , I mounted a Leupold Mark4 M1 3x9x36mm Duplex and not mildot. :evil:

Buy what works for you and your application. :rolleyes:

I went with a 3.5-10x Mark 4 M1 with the TMR reticle for my 300 Mag that Rick just built. Would have gone with the NXS 3.5-15 but they're damn near a pount heavier. The rifle will be a dedicated LR Hunter so I wanted somethign that would provide a good aim point on an animal whiel not covering too much of the vitals. I felt that the TMR was the best of the three available (TMR, Mildot and Duplex) for what I wanted to do.
