Tried searching WW1 military records On Govt site and got very little . Has any one done a search and gotten good results . All I could get was copy of enlistment papers . I have heard a few people say that they have gotten very detailed info .
Any tricks , any one had good luck ??

Once you've put in his name or Regimental number a page with the attestation paper will come up.

From there, go to the bottom of the page and there will be a blue link to the rest of his service record.

If it still doesn't work give us the individuals information and someone here will be able to help.

Tried again . Person not found
I have his enlistment photo , copy of attestment paper

Very cool.

I had a relative in WW1

Private Neil Johnston Poole
652060
Army
Canadian Infantry
160th Battalion "B" Company
transferred to the Canadian Casualty Assembly Centre, England, on Jan. 13th, 1917 prior to the breakup of the 160th Battalion in Feb. of 1918.

Is there a place to find more information? Where he may have been deployed and when?

Thanks
Dan

For the OP - the link that Missing Something put up works fine for me, click on the service file link towards the bottom of the page and you'll have his complete service record - 28 pages worth. Don't forget that the unit war diaries are also online and while a private will not normally be mentioned in them they make for some really interesting reading. Enjoy the hunt.

Dan B - Your man is there too - 60 pages in his service record. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discov...l-records/Pages/list.aspx?RegimentNum=652060&

For both of you - just type in the individuals service number I find it's usually the best/easiest search. I've done a name search before and have had to go through 70 or so names to find the one I wanted

Well that's a bit different bit of info than was handed down . How do you search his unit / battalion history ??
Any ideas on how to search his going to States and working as a ship builder ???

Hi LE303, I'll try and attach a couple of links to search the war diaries. The first one is the Library and Archives site and can be a bit difficult to work in at the beginning but it should work.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/lac-bac/search/arch_adv

The second one is through the University of Victoria (I think) and may prove useful as well.

http://cgwp.uvic.ca/diaries/index.php

I usually try the full unit name first and if that doesn't come up with anything I just start reducing the amount of information I put into the search.

Best of luck and as you've already noted family history is not always accurate. It's the old "this is the gun I used in the war" actually means "this is a gun like I used in the war"

As for going to the USA you may have to try one of the ancestry sites and ask them how to trace movement into the USA. There may also be records from the actual ship building company or yard that is online. Good luck and keep us posted, I love doing this kind of research for named items I have.
