I would take your .308 and push it out to 1000 yards. Once you burn the barrel out after 5000-6000 rounds then decide if you really want to drop $5000-$8000 on a new rifle. The other thing to ask when jumping into a .338 or any of the big boomers is will that combination fit the range safety template of the range(s) you plan to shoot on.
