looking at m14 for my first centerfire rifle, i like the semi auto and the price but im wondering about accuracy

i realize that they arent tack drivers and cost more to make accurate than a bolt, but is miljug accuracy at 300m with surplus realistic? what modifications would a stock m14 need to do this

Definately milkjug accurate at 200 meters with IVI 77 ammo. I'm 5/5 with my scoped gun on targets of that size. Haven't had a chance to shoot at a further distance. With good ammo, I believe it would be. I was getting a really good group at 200 meters with Federal hunting ammo, like I'd be expecting to hit a grapefruit 5/5 shooting off a bench.

It's not a matter of "modifications"
PEOPLE..... there is SO MUCH info in the stickies..... the FAQ's ect.... READ THEM :D

It is simply a matter of tightening up the gun and making sure it all runs safe and true. This doesn't mean you have to run out and load up on parts to "modify" the rifle to do something it may very well be already capable of.

If you want a nice tight norinco m14s, that has been tuned and tightened by a former gunsmith with the proper knowledge of these rifles...... Lazerus2000 has one listed in the blackrifle exchange. For the money he's askin and for the gun you'd be getting.......his price is right on the money.

When I bought mine it would shoot 2-3 inch with mil stuff.
I have swapped to usgi stock, ss oprod guide & gi spring. Index barrel unitized and shimmed the gas chamber and swapped the rear sight for M1 and filed down the front sight shorter and thinner. Using a hand load 155 Palma match with R15 powder, I am getting 1/2" moa off bench

There is no "qualitative" answer because each rifle is different and responds differently to the mods/tweaks. Some rifles will shoot superbly with no mods and others will not shoot well no matter what you do with them.

But what size groups are you getting with mil surplus ammo after the mods? Depending on the surplus ammo used and the care taken when making match reloads, the accuracy improvements you describe could be 100% attributable to the ammo.

In part the original question depends on the surplus ammo. I've seem some that wouldn't stay on a milkjug at 100m from a good boltgun.

On the other paw, the Portugese, Austrian and some of the British can be very good.

My personal 'Rinco M14 story is that after I bedded the original Chu-wood stock it would shoot honest 3-3.5" groups at 200m with the Austrian ammo, with a scope of course, because I really can't see well enough to shoot those irons like that.
