I installed a millet SKS All Steel scope mount (P/N AK00002) on my SKS today, along with a 4 reticle reflex sight. The SKS is a Norinco cheapy bought from Lever last month.

The installation took a little longer than I expected as the rear sight was difficult to remove. The below instrucions show the sight being removed with the gas tube and gas piston extension and extension spring still on the gun. I eventually realized that these must be removed to make it somewhat easier. It was still very dificult to remove and I would say its a 2 person job for most people.

Once the sight and spring were removed the mount was put on and the pivot pin installed. The pin was slightly bigger than the holes on the SKS and the holes required being drilled out. This pin must be removed along with the entire mount each time the gas piston is cleaned, so it has to be tight enough to not work free during use, but loose enough to enable removal and reinstallation without damage.

The rear of the sight mount is held in place by a Retaining Lock Nut which slides in to the rear of the original sight where the spring used to sit. The Nut was a tight fit and I used a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to tap it back as far as it would go in order for it to line up with screw that locks the sight in place. (Retaining screw is right screw shown below - left is elevation screw)

The scope was then installed and the elevation screws on the mount were adjusted.

The sight and mount feel very secure and no movement was detected once the screws were all tightened.

The view through the scope....the scope is somewhat higher then the original sight and it will be interesting to see how easy it is to sight in at the range.

UPDATE:
Tried out the scope and mount at TMSA. It seemed to hold in place nicely and the red dot was bright and sharp. One thing we did notice was when my friend (a lefty) shot it, the alignment of his head and the red dot was different from mine and produced groupings about 2" from mine (at 25yds)

BTW:
Millet scope mount was $58.16 Cdn plus $13.66 Customs duty (including $8.00 handling fee) so a grand total of $71.82....ouch thats half an SKS!!!
I had already purchased a 4 Reticle Electro Dot Sight from jackyiscxd, in one of his ebay auctions for $64.66 including shipping.

Seems to me that having to remove the mount before being able to disassemble the rifle to clean it is a pretty bad design deficiency.

kiwimatt, i have the exact same set up as you with the millet mount and the cheapy holosight. my mount is good, but my sight totally does not hold its zero....either that or im doing something wrong. oh...ya, i remember that rear sight being the biggest pain to get off.

X2. Especially when you're using corrosive. I like to strip and clean my gun while it's still warm (or smoking depending on how hard I was on it). I think I'll pass on this one.

Good morning:

We researched the SKS scout mount carefully before choosing it as our latest SKS accessory. Given the number of Yugo M-59 rifles we've put on the market over the years we wanted to ensure that our clients, who wanted and bought the best SKS available, have the proverbial pick of the litter where scout mounts are concerned.

Yes, the gas tube can be removed without removing our Scout Mount from the rifle! The weaver rail is secured to the scout mount base by four allen key screws (two on each side). Just unscrew these and the weaver rail comes right off (and can be installed again without loss of zero).

I think you'll like our new Scount Mount. We sure do :)

Merry Christmas,

- Peter

That makes more sense than the Millet set-up.

The new Marstar SKS scout scope mount is not Millet but the one from http://scoutscopes.com/

Seems like an excellent product.

Ditto. The Millet sight is available at GunAccessories.com for $34.99 (USD) and holds up pretty well. I did however have a few problems with it; first - the rear sight retaining pin holes were smaller than the pin supllied with the Millet kit and required filing. Second - if you overtighten the fastening screw (which is surprisingly effortless) you can snap the entire mount, which I happened to do. But the sight is a stable platform and holds up pretty well when used properly. Now, the ScoutScopes mount has gained a great reputation for the short period it's been on the market, Marstar has the mount for $100 + shipping, while the manufacturer sells it for somewhere around 55 USD. I'm considering it. Currently I'm using another Millet mount with a Kobra holosight.
