Does such an animal exist in Canada?

All I see are Norcs, Federal Ordnance, Polytech etc.

Were they all full auto? or was there a semi version?

Also is a converted select fire still restricted or no? not too clear on that one.

Basically what are the odds of locating an actual surplus M-14??

There could be about 2000++ m14 rifles from Israel and the uk in Canada. Then you have to factor how many have been parted out and assembled onto various receivers.

actually, it's 12(3) - i have3- trw, h&r, adn springy- still need a winchester

Lucky devil.... seems so unfair at times.... maybe one of these days:

Keeping the Law Up to Date

Law reform

Although much of our law was inherited from European legal traditions, as society grows and develops it cannot rely entirely on tradition. Sometimes there is an urgent need for new laws or for old laws to be changed. Even as government enacts reforms to address changing ethics and morality, society continues to evolve dynamically, making it necessary to reform laws constantly.

As Canadian society changes, we must make sure that our system of law and justice meets the challenges of our new society. Every day, we hear about social issues, medical developments, new types of technology – all of which may raise moral and legal questions. For example, we are increasingly becoming aware of the effects of modern society on our environment and of the immense threat of pollution and wasteful habits.

As people change the way they live and work, some laws may become obsolete or new situations may arise that are not dealt with by any existing law. For example, the same computer technology that enables one person to find information about another may also make it possible to “steal” information that was meant to be private. Old laws against theft did not foresee stealing computer files or indeed storing or moving information by such means. This kind of technological and social change makes it necessary to reform our laws.

More than just changing laws, we may need to change the system of law and justice itself. For instance, in our complex society it can take years to settle disputes. As our court system is stretched to the limit, other, less formal ways may help people settle their disputes. Some informal mediation methods, such as in landlord-tenant disputes, are already being used.

Changing laws

Government legal experts are constantly examining our laws, looking for ways to improve them. Law reform committees review laws and recommend changes. Lawyers bring questions of law to court to bring about change. Social action groups seek changes to laws that they consider unfair to members of Canadian society. Legislators at the federal, provincial and territorial governments respond by introducing new laws or amendments to old ones to be considered and debated in Parliament and the legislatures.

Ultimately, though, the responsibility for changing our laws is not left entirely to the lawyers, the experts or the interest groups. It is the people of Canada who elect the lawmakers; we need to decide what we want from the law and then make sure it reflects those wishes. Everyone has the right to point out flaws in the law and to work towards changing these laws – lawfully, of course.

I'd be happy to be able to just take the pins out of my mags right now....

boy somebody has been feeding you a load- the real things came in from isreal back in the 90's before 92 when prime minister kimmie had her s*it fit and went nuts-
they were NEVER full auto, but semi auto from the factory period- they came with a special "baggie" that contained full auto conversion parts that were added to CERTAIN SELECT rifles-this was determined at BATTALION LEVEL, and not to every trooper- the surplus baggies were returned to one of the parts warehouses; it was also determined that the m14 was INEFFECTIVE as a squad automatic, and replaced in that role by the m60
the baggies were then available via e-bay or contract bid-
the m14s we got from isreal are SEMI AUTOMATIC in spirit, but the dummies at the batf got convinced they were full auto/select fire; therefore they were MACHINE GUNS and treated as such- our stupid government, instead of actually proving the point for themselves, just followed suit and PROHIBITED them even though they were PERFECTLY LEGAL and MODIFIED to cbsa standards just 2 years before ( this involved making the selector knob non-removable and grinding off the roller bearing) - so in other words, the govermnent, ie the cfc went back on their word -when dave tomlinson tried to prove to the supreme court that you cant modify a semi automatic rifle ( as it was declared by the cfc) to a semiauto ( ie it already was a semi) he got nowhere
if we ever get the m14 back to where it was before all this nonsense started( ie a NON RESTRICTED RIFLE) WHICH THE FOLKS OVER AT THE NFA are still working on), you will be able to buy a real one, if you're willing to PAY THE PRICE- they'll not be the 2-400 we paid back then- and folks have been stripping them for parts, so the supply isn't there as full rifles
now, if you still want a "real" , get one built- it'll be all new parts, on a smith or lrb receiver, and you won't have to worry about the "machine gun " thing

No one fed me a load, that was an assumption I made based on a TV show I saw a while back [many years actually] where they were demonstrating why a full auto M-14 was unsuitable. [and ho-yea, all over the place!]

oh my! this sounds interesting, but how does that make it 'legal' ~ something to do with the receiver? [I ask just before I start googling it!]

get ahold of oldsmobiler- he did a 'full build civilan " a while back- follow his steps and you'll end up with a better than usgi m14 type- and fully LEGAL
and don't believe everything you see on tv- different has a legal m14 and it's VERY ACCURATE- the trick is just like with the c2- SHORT BURSTS
