Hey guys,

Just a quick question on storing my rifle. I've got a Finnish MN that I keep in my closet, and this is the second time I notice surface rust just appearing on it (nothing in the barrel though). Just like I did the last time this happened, I took a piece of paper cloth and removed it completely, and then put some gun oil. I clean the damn thing religiously after shooting, and it's frustrating to see the rust creeping up on me.

Basically, I wanna know how to store it so I don't have to worry about it, since it seems that the closet idea is not working.
 
if you like to shoot them or take them out and play often you will have to oil them often. the frequency depends on the humidity in you closet /house.

If your hanging on to them for the long haul , grease them up and wrap them.

For the best of both worlds why not get a cabinet or safe with a glow rod/40w light bulb in it. this will drive down the humidity so you only have to oil them once in a wile.

I agree--the light bulb really works.
After they are oiled they don't rust with the light on--I have found.
 
Well so far I only have one, and I'm too broke to add any new ones...how much does that cabinet cost? And how often should I oil it? (so far I've been oiling it once a month, though I'll probably completely disassemble it pretty soon to get rid of the cosmoline and re oil it...sticky bolt indeed!)

Canadian tire sells bolt together cabinets for around 160$ or so. you can get them on sale too. they are not a "safe" but do keep them out of site, and out of the hands of others in the house. combined with a "bake recharge" or a light bulb, your rifle should not rust.
Maybe you can source an old school locker if funds are tight?

if it is rusting within a month of being oiled, id say thats a bad place for your gun. oil it more , or pony up and buy some proper storage
