About a decade ago I was on a flight from Calgary to back East. The flight oddly dove down over Montana and we flew over what clearly looked like a USAF base,

Anyway I was never able to locate the base since it wasnt Minot or Great Falls, but recently stumbled over a video about a Ghost Town in Montana, which turns out to be the old Glasgow USAF base, which was long since deserted.

The base was once part of the rapid response bases across the Northern States, but no doubt being in the middle of no where, with no major near by city helped in the USAF finally closing it in the mid 70s. Since then the dystopian hellscape that is St Marie has continued. A fraction of the homes are still lived in, and the runways are owned by Boeing who use them for testing, but with nothing much there, and being almost 300 miles from Great Falls or Billings, the 'village' of St Marie has continued to decay. I cant think of a Canadian Base of anything near this size that descended into such an abyss, but enjoy:

Also North about an hour is an old radar site near Ophiem, on the satellite images it looks like there is more there, but in reality most of it is hidden foundations amongst the grass.DSC01255.JPG

I have a friend that lives in Glasgow not far from that retired strategic air command base , and had an opportunity to purchase a PMQ on base back in the 80's if I remember correctly. Lots of low rolling hill areas for shooting opportunities. Also lots of wind

The base north of Glasgow was promoted as a retirement town after it closed. Cheap but good housing. It never really worked out. I met one of the promoters. He was a Vietnam vet. Flew prop planes, sky raiders I think, and had been shot down 3 times.

Rivers, MB is a similar situation. It was abandoned by the military with PMQs given to the natives who soon rendered them uninhabitable. One of the hangars was used as a hog barn.
Some of the little houses were moved from Rivers to the Long Plain FN. The area was called the "Rivers Sub".
