Milsurps anyone?

I see they have huge quantities of mags. In combat situations what do troops do with empty mags assuming they cannot refill them as soon as they are empty as in an infantry attack situation. Do they drop them, keep them and only get new ones when back to base. I can't see them putting them back in their pouches under fire. They go through those pretty fast.
