I know, I know it is not quite an assault weapon but it is still a LE oriented firearm so I figure I would post it in this section.

Does anyone know if a Mini-14 GB is restricted? I know that the Ruger AC-556 has either a 13" or 18" barrel and I've seen some GB with 16 1/8" barrel in the states. Are they any different in Canada?

Any GB owner?

Thanks

Mini-14 GB isn't restricted . There are Ruger AC-556 automatic rifles registered to private collectors in Canada.

Ruger mini 14 rifles with a barrel less than 18.5 inches are restricted in Canada. This includes the Mini 14 GBCPC and Mini 14 CF. These have a 16.12 inch barrels according to Rugers catalog. I am not aware of any of these in Canada but there may be a few.

I have a classic GB made in 1997. It has a blue finish and a wooden stock. I got a factory 20-rounder as well as a genuine M7 bayonet for it. I believe it's an ex-police rifle as it has an inventory number (11) etched on its left side. It's non-restricted.
I think that before the Mini-14 was revamped a few years ago, the GB model only came in 2 barrel lengths, the standard length with a full stock and the short length with a side-folding stock, just like the AC-556. Now it's available in all sorts of factory configurations.
Does anyone know if the AC-556 has a heavier barrel than the GB because I can't see my rifle's barrel lasting too long on an AC-556.

That would make it a 186 series? how accurate is it? I just bought a factory folding stock, now all I need is a decent Mini (hopefully I find a GB).

186-series is correct. I've finally gotten around to sighting it in at 100 yards. I was surprised at how accurate it is. As an all-purpose medium-caliber carbine, it has more than enough accuracy. I even fired a few rounds at 200 yards. I aimed for the top edge of the target and got almost all my shots in the target (albeit pretty all over the place). I was prone.
How much did the stock cost?
I was surprised at how quickly the barrel overheated. I was not impressed. That's why I'm wondering about the thickness of the AC-556's barrel.
I got my GB from The Shooting Edge for about $900 in '07.

Dillinger, you might want to clarify that you rapid fired 20 rounds by having 4x 5 round magazines and weren't using that 20.

I have a stainless steel Mini14GB and a blue Mini14GB. The London Police Service in the UK issued them and then replaced them with MP5's. The blue one have a side base for some type of british scope.

The GB I have has the OPP stamps on it. & also have stamped on the side for law Enforcement / Military use only. Anyone know whey that is there. Also came with a Leo 20/5 rd mag.

Very interesting and collectable Mini-14. I'd say it's worth at least $1,000 due to the OPP stamp. I called Ruger to ask them for a letter of authenticity/provenance for my Mini-14 but they don't do that. They checked the serial number and told me it had been shipped from their factory in late 1997. I also have the factory LAW ENFORCEMENT/MILITARY USE ONLY marking.

Very cool and valuable Mini-14. I wish I had a Royal Ulster Constabulary-marked Mini-14.

I think that some of royal ulster guns were put in storage. Ruger was playing "Colt" when it came to Mini14GB's and didn't want them sent out to the "colonies". The London Police Service sold some of them as long as they went to the "colonies"..Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Then they quit selling them. The factory 20rd magazines were $2.00 ea.
