I know its not a 'service/battle' rifle but I thought this would be the best forum.:)

Drag said rifle out to range, rifle fires, ejects spent case, cycles bolt BUT will not pick up round in cycle, I have to manually reload (cycle) in order to pick up fresh round, changed mags to no avail.......

The Mini-14 has been used a fair bit by police, special models have been made for paramilitary sales and it is based on a military design, so I have no issue with your posting the question here.

You have not mentioned if the bolt has caught the rim of the next case or not. If it has caught the rim, but failed to strip the round, it is likely a bad or dirty magazine, or the recoil spring is weak.

If it has not caught the rim, then either it is short-stroking or something with the mag or rifle is not right, so the round does not sit high enough to fall into the path of the feed horn.

When you cycle the bolt by hand, does the round get picked up by the bolt, and fed into the chamber easily? If so, short stroking is likely your issue. Plugged gas systems or weak ammo are the cause.

If the rifle is unmodified, Ruger's warranty applies.

Thanks guys......I tried 3 different mags, all ruger, it would skip over the round on its way 'closed' but would load the round when prompted manually

'wendell' this ruger came across on the ark but is in excellent condition and all stock.........I should read the fine print but what is the warranty time frame from date of puchase or ????

When you clean a 14, make sure to strip the whole gas path down and scrub the bejesus out of all parts. Depending on how much carbon you have in there, a selection of good wire bristle brushes and dental type picks may be required. This has cured more than a few Mini ails for me.

Make Sure Your Op Rod Is Not Upside Down And Is Straight .if You Have A Recoil Buffer In It ,remove It.if None Of These Problems Make Sure The Gas Port From The Barrel Is Clean And Not Plugged Or Restricted With Crud.if The Gas Port Is Restricted The Bolt Will Not Cycle All The Way Back There Is Not Enough Gas Force To Compress The Spring And Cycle It?local Gun Smith Also Good Idea If You Can Not See The Problem.

If you took the gas block off the barrel, make sure that you've put it back perfectly lined up and torque it to the proper specs otherwise the gas block's hole will not be lined up with the gas port anymore and you will have short strokes.

Im shooting pmc, south african, rem umc all factory nooo reloads, they were cycling just fine in my buddies mini who was with me that day....

I had that problem on a ruger ranch rifle .223 and the quick fix was a wolf high speed op rod spring. After that it never gave me any problems. Use this gun at work and put thousands of rounds through it, without any problem.
