Hi, need some advice on how to safely extract a Mini 14 from a Sparta stock.

The blessed thing, second hand and clearly not serviced in a long time, is well and truly stuck in the stock that has shrunk a bit around it.

No levering or prying out without breaking something.

Can someone let me know the best way of carefully widening the stock and creating enough space to allow a proper disassembly.

I also do not have the spacers that may have come originally with the stock, so would like to implement a solution to ensure the stock stays in shape while I work on the action.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Wallenstein,

Have you tried heating the whole rifle? I’m not positive but I believe that the plastic will expand more rapidly than the metal as you heat it up so that may allow for enough of a difference between the two to get them a part. I’m not sure how much heat could be applied safely before the stock starts to deform so an email to the manufacturer would be wise.

It could also be “glued” into the stock due to years of neglect. Once again, if you could find a solvent that is safe for the stock then you might be able to soak it down and get that sucker a part. Just my 2 cents!

Get penetrating oil and heat the plastic stock up with a heat gun. Remove the trigger assy if you can.
Get oil all around the reciever to get between the stock and the steel. Then heat up the plastic with the heat gun.
You might have to get under the receiver with a flat head between the stock and the rear of the receiver and pry up on it while the stock is soft and the penetrating oil will hopefully soften up any crud between the two.
If you can get the top rail off the stock then you should be able to tap a flathead driver or a wedge of some kind between the heel of the rear of the receiver and the stock. The area behind the opp rod is what I'm talking about. Dont pry up on or mallet your wedge under the thin lower bottom half of the op rod guide channel in the receiver.
I'm pretty sure the combination of heat, penetrating oil and a good sharp couple whacks wedging the rear of the action up should do it. Make sure the stock is well locked down so you transfer all the energy to hinging up the rear of the receiver.

Yes, the top rail came off. I had to crack the 4 screws on the sides, but was able to get them off without stripping them.

Any recommendations for the penetrating oil ? Would WD40 suffice ?

I have the necessary tools so will give this a go.
