Mini-14 sucks less? How to tell?

I've seen posts in some discussion threads claiming that the accuracy of the mini-14 is not that great.

I've seen other posts which claim accuracy of these rifles has recently been improved.

Does anyone have a reference (link) to substantiate recently improved accuracy?

Given a rifle, how would you tell if it was one of the newer (improved) rifles or one of the older (good enough) rifles?

Thanks!

Should be able to date it from the serial number, give ruger a call I think they've changed the sights recently as well.
It is amazing that Ruger has been producing this rifle for so long and yet the general consensus seems to be that they suck?
Ruger seems to do fine with other models I don't see why they couldn't get the Mini's to at least around 2 moa....

If I knew the date of manufacture, I'd also need to know date of "improvements"...

I thought they *were* around 2moa guns.

How bad are they?

Hi KFB,

Long time, no "see". :p

I had one awhile back, and that one shot pretty well. It was a "181" series (first part of s/n) Mini, and it would consistently print 3 shots into about an inch and a half; with two of the shots very close together.

I have also heard that the newer ones tend to be more accurate in general, but I forget where the s/n of these start.

Best wishes, Jeff.

it is easy to tell the new "Ranch Rifle" it has a winged/protected front sight like a military rifle and a rounded less square receiver with the integral scope mount that ruger has used for years
there was an article in Varmint Hunter magazine one or two issues ago with a test and the results were pretty good with a bunch of different ammo but it was LP Brezny(sp) writing the article and iirc he never says anything bad as most of his articles are like reading ad copy or whatever he is testing......
