Out of these two rifles, which is the better buy?

AR 180b $1000.00 @ Wolverine OR Mini 14 $879.00 @ S.I.R.

I am looking for a .223/5.56 for plinking and occasionally ground hogs. Would probably put 1K through her a year. Price is a factor... so, right now the "black special" is out of the question:( (I would make an exception though if the XCR ever arrives:confused: )

So your opinions... why or why not, would be appreciated. More specifically about the Mini 14, as I have read on this board quite a bit about the 180b.

Thanks

AR180B. Cheaper magazines, easier to find magazines. Also it looks nifty and is a great little rifle. Plus new accessories are coming out every day for the little 180B.

I've never owned a Mini-14 but from what I've read they aren't know for their accuracy. Get a 180B.

X2 ----BUT if cost is a factor then buy a mini-14 used for 500-600 if you can find a 180 for that kind of money I'll buy it

the search option doesnt work that good
but i have a 180 b and buddy has a mini out of the 2 they shoot pretty damn close. His mini just broke the extractor so i called western gun parts, turns out its a restricted part that can only be sold to a gunsmith. Not sure if the 180b has that problem but it makes me wonder what else is restricted for the mini.
his is stock mine has a flash hider, folding stock, stormwerks rail, not sure if you can buy stuff like that for the mini.
what it comes down to is what you like. He likes his I love mine.
BUY THE AR 180B in my opinion its way cool

Sparky,

Good to know the Mini has that kind of reliability. As for the search, did it, really got nothing from it.

The 180b seems to have a few advantages... thanks for the replies. I think that I am going to need some trigger time behind each to sort this out.

If you want more info on mini-14's go to perfectunion BBS.there are lot of do it yourself tips that will not cost you alot and will give you 1.5"to 2.5" groups.

the new mini's are nice and a whole lot more accurate then the old model.... magazines are not hard to get, same place you buy the gun as russels and wholesale both have them cataloged.

frankly those that say mini mags are hard to find don't have a clue.... hell both gunstores that are local have the factory mags on the shelf... but no ar15 mags.

the mini has built in rings, makes mounting a scope easier, the ar180 has that goofy rear sight which means you either have to hack it off to get the scope to sit low or you will need a cheek rest....

get the mini if you want a hunting / plinking rifle..... get the sythetic / stainless version if you want look cool.

not slagging the ar180b but without modification it is just not the rifle the mini-14 is as far as set up for hunting.

I thought you couldent buy new model mini 14's in canada anymore??. I thought it was only second hands that were already in the country.

My local gun store had 4 of them in stock last time I was there..... don;t see any reason why they would not be allowed to be exported from the usa due to the fact they are a sporting arm.

I had a mini-14 and and an AR 180. The mini was reliable but not especially accurate, the BEST I could do with it was 4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards, Usually it was in the 5"-6" range. The AR 180 was reliable and a consistant 2" shooter. I miss the AR 180 but not the Mini 14. I owned both of the rifles in the early '80s so things may have changed a lot. I never shot the AR180B but I would take it over a new Mini14 based on past experience with similar rifles.

Also the original post said that price was a factor and you are NOT going to find an AR for anywhere near the price of a MINI
MINI's are still allowed Al simmons has numerous ones in stock

Well, I really hope so. I have owned 2 Mini's, an original 180 series and a Ranch Rifle; both were horrible. Neither one of them would group any better than 4-5" at 100yds. For a rifle that sits in the $700 price range, it was certainly disappointing, both times. Hey, maybe I got two lemons over the course of 10 years...who knows. Regardless, I'll never buy another one.

"... worked for the A-Team"

Toooooooo funny!

Thankyou for starting my day on a positive note, Deckard!
